Is the bench press a truly functional exercise?

for me, no matter the form, the last 4 months its been causing me bad shoulder pain. I’ve since swapped to dumbells and I’ve made so much more progress and strength without the pain. stength all round on chest has gone up compared to stagnating on barbell benchpress

What about the floor press? Less range of motion than the bench press, and therefore is less functional.

One summer day, my father went to change the exhaust pipes, mufflers, and tailpipes on our 1964 Country Sedan station wagon.

This was in the 1970s, before most cars had scissor jacks and spots for them on the frame bottom.

He parked on a level spot of the gravel driveway. Used two bumper jacks on the rear bumper and put cinder blocks under the wheels. The blocks didn’t quite reach the tires.

At some point, my mother went outside and heard someone faintly say, “Help.”

My father was next to the vehicle, on his back, unable to move.

Turns out the jacks had bent, the tires had missed the blocks, and the rear of the station wagon came down on his chest.

Had it been the front, with the engine, he’d have been crushed to death instantly.

Even with the rear of the car on top of them, most guys would have suffocated or been crushed. I’m certain I would’ve been.

Not my Dad. It just pissed him off.

He floor pressed the station wagon, slid himself out from under it, and lay there, unable to move. Mom called an ambulance.

Ambulance attendants put him on a fracture board and took him to the hospital.

My Dad had broken ribs and collarbone on the side where the car came down on him.

He didn’t lift. Never.

I surmise he applied a combination of 20 years of Marine Corps training and pure anger. Similar to those mothers we’ve all read about who lifted cars off their children.

What we don’t read about is the damage one’s body sustains after all that energy has coursed thru it.

In winter, when it’s too cold to exercise outside or in my garage, I floor press in the basement. (And since I’m already on the floor, hip thrusts right after.)

But does it deliver functionality?

In my brain, yes. Altho I stopped working on vehicles shortly after college when I could afford to pay someone with more knowledge.
