Is it the Evaluation update or the CPB book?
No I believe it’s an update for the Evaluation of Arthur Jones contributions …book …not for the compound Bicep book of Hutchins.
I’m guessing you got the compound bicep book? Was it helpful for you ?
Scott
Scott, My assessment of the CPB book is it’s a very interesting book. Like you, I enjoy reading about the interactions with Jones. The sufficiency arguments are hard to dispute. His points on the machine design are are also very compelling. I did try his version of the free weight biceps curl using an EZ curl bar (which I never use) on Friday and my biceps were sore on Saturday and more so today. I DID NOT use SS protocol, more like 3/3 or 4/4. As I said before, I knew the CPB was not a “game-changing” machine. But I still think it has value as an exercise. Though not at the price of trying to attain one these days. I suppose to evaluate it’s effectiveness you would have to use it exclusively for a period of time. I made some good gains back in the day using it. But,
I was also using the Plate-Loader, and doing chins. So, impossible to tell really. I like reading about the early days of Nautilus, even if I don’t necessarily like or agree with everything he says. He is a very intelligent guy and his opinions are interesting reading.
Oh, I did see they moved your Nautilus Machine thread to another place. I will check that one now as well as this forum.
Everyone should have received a notification already. This is usually done immediately after updates are made.
Drew, Didn’t get mine. Sent you an e-mail.
Yea I often wonder how many who mainly come here because of Dr. Darden and Nautilus like me ever venture over to that part of the site??
Scott
No one person has the corner on all truth.
I think one of the saddest part of the Evaluation of Arthur Jones book was the part after Jones sold Nautilus and tons and tons of Nautilus prototypes , photos and such were just destroyed.
For me there’s at least two pieces of the Arthur Jones puzzle that still alludes me. Nautilus had what seemed like millions of dollars in TV cameras, studios and the like but seemed to drop it like a hot potato . What happened with that ? Then what happened that suddenly made Arthur decide to give up on Nautilus and sell it??
Scott
Chapter three of Jones’ biography explains how he ended up selling Nautilus practically by accident.
Yes that is a beautiful machine and believe me I’d love to have it but you are asking twice what I’ve paid for every Nautilus machine I’ve ever owned and that’s around 20-25 machines including the plate loading pullover , BNTA and plate loading bi-tri.
Scott
I put it up on the Nautilus fb page. Very nice piece!
Thinking about the compound both arms up bicep or CPB1 I’m pretty sure you have to alternate arms, you can’t contract them at the same time. Correct me if I’m wrong ? That would mean if you are alternating arms you would need to use the same pace going up or down? No longer eccentric than the concentric ? If not I would think while one arm is curling the other had to wait until the curling arm finished ?
Scott
Actually, you can contract both arms at the same time. I did it when I used it years ago.
There is a picture of it in the 1973 IronMan Nautilus ad. http://arthurjonesexercise.com/Ironman/ads/1973IronManNautilusAds.pdf
Once again Strengthmaster comes through again!! I had never seen that picture. It seems every picture I’ve ever seen of it the user is alternating arms. Since that machine seems to be impossible to get short of selling ones house , in the back of my head I was hoping that if you had to alternate arms it would kill my desire to have one, not so! The search continues! Ha ha!
Thanks
Scott
Very cool articles. I’m gonna go read them now!
And Scott, you could’ve had the one in Sarasota! You just would have had to sell 3/4 of what you have now! But hey …![]()
There will be others and besides that machine might be too nice for my collection. My machines have all been around the block so to speak so I’m thinking they might be a little put off by something that pristine joining the club!!
Scott
Sounds like the movie Toy Story.
I am thinking that if you had gotten one of those magic compound bicep machines years ago, you’d probably be taller, richer, and younger than you are now… But would your biceps be any bigger?
