MedX Bicep Curl

I have the opportunity to buy a MedX bicep curl for $2500 and wanted to get feedback from anyone who owns or has trained on one before pulling the trigger. I’m a big fan of MedX and Nautilus equipment in general, but I need to be pragmatic.

Will the MedX bicep curl deliver significantly better results than curls with a barbell or dumbbell?

Can you elaborate please? I’m curious to know what your experience was like compared to a barbell or dumbbell.

If you’re being truly pragmatic you have to think, “even if this offers slightly better gains for my biceps than a barbell or dumbbells(probably doesn’t), is it really worth $2500?” And if money is no issue and you’re just a well-off collector, then just get it, it’ll go great with your collection. This stuff gets harder to come by every year.

As far as machines go, is there a consensus for the best machine for the biceps?

I agree. I own a couple of Nautilus machines and I really enjoy training on them. I’ll most likely buy it.

A lot of people say the Nautilus plate loaded bicep/tricep machine is the best machine for the biceps. However I have read that the MedX bicep curl is the best bicep machine.

I have used the original Nautilus plate loader bi/tri machine. The seat is not adjustable enough and is smallish. I did not care for the handle/bar on this machine. Otherwise , this is a good machine.

However,

The Nautilus multi bi/tri eclipsed this machine and was very popular. Nothing feels as good as a smooth multi arm machine. The akinetic /infimetric bar has never been duplicated or surpassed by anything else. I’m keeping mine!

IMO, the very best biceps machine is the simple seated Scott curl bench. Use an Olympic plate loaded easy curl bar. Have at least eight 20lb chains and attach cords so you can vary the length. Then you can do Scott curls with just straight weight or all accommodating weight (chains) and every combination in between.

There is absolutely no internal resistance so the positive and negative are the same resistance.

Have you used any of the other Nautilus bicep machines such as the Nautilus Nitro Bicep Curl? You have your arms over your head kind of like the compound bicep machine.

The best of the best was featured in Darden’s Advanced Nautilus bodybuilding book. The best of the best arm routines. Arthur sold Nautilus soon after this book. Nothing beats a multi, especially Nitro or compound bicep(novel concept given up on).

Here is another biceps “machine” that was my favorite before discovering accommodating resistance. Once again it uses a seated Scott curl bench. With two dumbbells doing bi-lateral curls the “secret” was not allowing the dumbbells to touch each other. Once again there is no internal resistance, so the negative is never compromised. I liked this much better than the first Nautilus bi-tri plate loaded machine

How does the Hammer plate loaded curl machine stack up? There’s very little friction on it.

There is very little internal resistance with Hammer plate loaded equipment. They are well suited for getting maximum negative benefits. I have never tried the Hammer plate loaded curl machine or even seen one, so I cannot comment one way or the other.

What is your opinion of the Hammer Strength plate loaded curl?

I’m curious, have you ever tried the Hammer Strength curl or their equipment in general? What do you think of it compared to Nautilus and MedX?

You didn’t ask me, but IMO the very best, by a large margin, leg extension machine is the plate loaded Strive leg extension machine. It is Hammer-like, but with custom varying resistance curve capabilities.

Yes, I’ve used the Hammer curl along with some of their other equipment. I liked the bicep curl. It’s been so long since I used the old Nautilus bi/tri machine I can’t compare them. I used that one for years but it’s hard to make a comparison because it was a long time ago. I used to belong to a gym that had the one in the pic of Boyer Coe someone posted above and I like the Hammer better. When I first started using Nautilus in the 70’s the gym had the one with the foot pedal you could use for added negative resistance and I hated it. I’ve not tried MedX.

As far as Hammer in general goes I like some of their chest presses, rows, and pulldowns. I don’t like the overhead press because it hurts my shoulders. I don’t like their leg extension or leg curl machines but the original leg press (not the one where the legs are independent) is a favorite of mine.
