Is That Jack Reacher?!?

Tom Cruise Luoma? Who knew?!

I will say Tom Cruise does look a bit taller stand on his stack of money and fame.

Saw the movie last night and thought it was very good. I have read all the Reacher books except for the one that just came out so was very skeptical about casting Tom Cruise as Reacher because of his size, but I think he pulled it off. Not once did I think that this movie would be so much better if Cruise was just 8 or 9 inches taller.

Fight scenes were as brutal and ruthless as described in the books.

The car chase scenes were what you expect from Reacher, all full throttle and slamming of brakes. No finesse.

The movie was pretty close to the book with obvious shortcuts thrown in due to the movie length. Was also shot in Pittsburgh which was a good location.

Go see - it’s a good escape.

I’ve never watched a Tom Cruise movie thinking that. It’s not strictly about the height.

I think the real tragedy here is all the classic Chevelles getting trashed to make this flick.
Yeah. They trashed them like they were proud of it.

The movie as a whole improved on the novel. The Zec’s crew are stripped right down and Reacher loses a few allies.

Cruise acts his socks off as a hard man but classic Reacher moments like destroying a massive diner breakfast are ruined. For instance, Cruise picks a mouthful from a huge plateful and the camera cuts away.

A post modern, Dalton-esque “I thought you’d be bigger” comment would have gone a long way to establish Cruise as a live action Reacher (i.e: you eat like a bigger guy, you fight like a bigger guy and your rep precedes you).

That is, if size really was a metaphor.

The opening was excellent, but from then on Cruise should’ve played the stud cop Emerson as a decoy lead, leaving the way open for a lesser name. It would’ve been a better role for him. I still say Kevin Durand would be a great Reacher.

I can imagine him standing up in the sports bar with Jeb & co. thinking they were underpaid.

Agreed, they swung and missed with this.

Oh well in 5 years there will be a reboot

Definitely. I don’t see this becoming a long-running franchise. Chris McQuarrie said that Cruise is too old to film all the novels and I doubt Cruise was ever up for a commitment of that size (he’s planning on starring in a reboot of Van Helsing)…

It’s a good movie, but at the same time it’s not the acme of Tom Cruise’s acting career. They should’ve approached this like they did with The Green Mile: cast a relative unknown with established names as support. Durand’s stock has risen in recent years (Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman both work with him regularly) and he’s overdue for a lead.

Plus, I want to see Reacher throwing thugs out of windows and bear hugging bad guys to death.

Agreed Roy on all counts

Still waiting for that ham, I bet.

Tom Cruise would’ve delivered that ham in NO time. Running, of course.
TC, what is your opinion of Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher?
Man, I’m ALWAYS puzzled when producers cast Tom Cruise in movies. He’s got such a weird off-camera vibe (and rep), that I can’t imagine people see his movies because he’s in them.

As far as Reacher specifically, you’re always asking for trouble with a book/comic book franchise’s fans when you cast someone who’s so incongruous with the author’s description. Truth be told, though, I haven’t seen the movie.
He produces a lot of his own movies (like this one), so there’s that. I also don’t see how his off-camera persona matters at all when it comes to his work on-camera, unless you’re saying you don’t know why anyone would want to work with him because he’s such a quack. I get that completely. I do like most of his movies though.

I think The Rock would have been a great Jack Reacher. I think people could get over the fact that he’s not an Aryan-looking dude a lot more easily than they could get over the size discrepancy. Reacher sounds very similar to The Rock’s character in Faster, except for the running/driving part.

But then, I think The Rock should be cast in just about every action movie made because he’s fucking awesome, so I am biased.
I thought the same thing when I saw Faster. Also, when I picked up my first Reacher book Persuader I thought of The Rock while reading it.

Another thing for the people happy with Cruise is that it’s not 1994 or whatever anymore…it’s not like a producer is supposed to come running into the room with a smile screaming “Good news! We can get Tom Cruise in our movie!!”
Since when did it mean you got a great actor when you got Cruise? Since when does Reacher even need to be played by a ‘great actor’???

It is if the producer is Tom Cruise.

looooool

I never read the books, but I was surprised by the movie (in a good way).

I wasn’t impressed by the casting for the detective though; it seemed to make sense in the beginning, but by the end with all the reveals, it seemed too predictable. Could have been a more interesting character.

Overall, was good. Not great, but good. I enjoyed watching it too, which is worth something.

this thread has piqued my interest in these books.

Do you need to read them in order?

I just read the first few post, so that is all I will be commenting on.

The movie was great, better than I thought it would be by a long shot. I would give it 7.5-8/10.

I would have loved to see the movie have a huge dude as the character was portrayed in the book, which I have not read, but there are not many Arnolds in Hollywood.

I believe Tom Cruise captured the character that they were going for, what is the likeness to the book? I have no idea.

Yes, a dude like Chis Hemsworth could play Jack Reacher and look more the part, but I do not think he would have the attitude they were going for.

I am a little biased as I was distracted by the chick’s cleavage every time she was on screen.

Reacher is not a BBr he is 6’5" and around 250 pounds at his biggest in one of the books, from digging pools all summer in south Florida.

Think this

Saw this the other day. I have no experience with the books other than seeing what you all have talked about. It was okay, but nothing special. If I had it to do over again, I’d wait to rent it.

I think I figured out what the problem was with Cruise in this one (other than the height issue). He does fine in action movies, but he’s not a tough guy. The Jack Reacher character that they were trying to show in the movie needed a believable tough guy vibe.

Tom Cruise telling someone that he’s going to “bash their head open and drink their blood from a boot” was absolutely laughable. Coming from The Rock, or Durant (though I don’t know if he can carry a entire film as lead), or someone like Tom Hardy, the line and personality would’ve felt more legit.

This was totally just Cruise thinking he’s about 10 years younger than he really is.

Have hit the nail on the head my friend

We should do this to DJ whilst watching Reacher.
