Tom Cruise will put asses in seats folks, it’s really that simple.
Its much like the miscasting of Travis Mcgee from Macdonald. An iconic book hero whose appearance is part of his appeal is cast much differently. In all likelihood it takes what could have been a profitable multiple movie deal and turns into a one and done.
The literary merits of the work don’t really matter actually his plots likely lend themselves very well to movies.
Its a hugely popular series that hits the bestseller list with every new episode. Its main character is iconic and changing everything about him likely will hurt the box office.
I’d say Cruise would be a better Lucas Davenport. Or better in movies made from James Lee Burke’s work. Burke’s stuff is a bit more literary but still strong male heroes with a focus on man’s inhumanity to man and violence, but not so much tied up in the physical characteristics of the character.

Then why even bother 'adapting ’ the books in the first place if Cruise’s name and image is needed to sell tickets? Why not just go with an original character like he usually does?
I think Mickey Rourke (even though only 5’11") could have pulled it off. In Sin City he basically nailed the part of Marv, who resembled in many ways Reacher.
