Is a 400 Pound Deadlift Attainable for Most Women?

I will say that women that are built for deadlifts and also listen to Pantera can probably hit a 400lb deadlift.

I’ve heard this argument and I find it very bogus. For instance @Pinkylifting we are around the same weight, and you are as lean or even leaner than me, yet you deadlifted 675.

And I could use as example many lean powerlifters or olympic weightlifter with elite level. Hell I even know and trained with one for a while, who was ripped as hell and with a 722,5 kgs in the 83 kgs class (sure he was on stuff but still)

So there’s other things at play. Mind you I’ve been 70 lbs heavier and it wasn’t really that great. Granted perhaps I just have bad genetics (small frail joints, natural valgus, ACL surgery on both knees, wrist surgeries while being young) and it annoys me that I have to work harder and be more patient. I’ve trained 16 years olds who were deadlifting 170 kgs and I really felt like shit ahahah

no. but what is most? most women at walmart or most women at a crossfit gym

Comparisons between individuals are not the same thing as comparisons within an individual.

If i was 100lb heavier, I would deadlift more than I do now as well.

There is a very strong relationship between bodyweight and weight moved in most compound lift. There is huge amounts of data supporting this. The fact that one particular 150lb guy lifts more than one particular 250lb guy is irrelevant.

Also I deadlifted 705, just FYI

I buy this for squat and bench. I’ve seen guys lose lbs off of the deadlift by gaining weight (I think this is kinda unusual, and most will deadlift more with more BW, but the relationship is weak). Their bench and squat shot up though.

Additionally, the top guys in 220 and 242 are almost deadlifting what the top SHW guys are. It wouldn’t surprise me if a higher percentage of say 220-242 guys are pulling say 800, than the SHW guys.

Well I was feeling good. Now I am back to being weak.

Damn you’re a freak, congrats!

Well I still have hope, I broke a 5 years bench plateau by just having the opportunity to rest more, I have faith than when I’ll leave my God-forsaken stress-inducing job in a few months I’ll be able to grow more

True, there are diminishing returns to a point, and negative returns past a point. (If i put on 500lbs rather than 100lb i would probably squat less) and anecdotally it does look like the point of negative returns is lower for deadlift than squat and definitely lower than bench.

However those negative returns are definitely still a long way away when you are, by most standards, lean or ā€˜ripped’.

Excellent way of putting it in words.

I know two guys (brothers) that are just freaks in the deadlift. The younger brother is gotta be like 135-140 lbs (really skinny) and about 6’ tall. He is 14, and has pulled 455. The older brother is about the same height at 210 lbs and IIRC he is 23. He is pulling in the 800s (he hasn’t done it in a comp yet, but did lock out 810 in comp, but dropped it before the down command).

Well I need to be able to explain to people why I cant get that 400lb bench. Id rather say its because Im unwilling to get fat than I’m just not strong enough to bench more than 375

Well you got me by 105 lbs on deadlift, but on the true test of strength I got you by 10 lbs :grinning:

Just from my 53 years of weight training, I don’t recall seeing any woman deadlift 400 lbs. I do understand a good percentage of those years had very limited involvement of women lifting weights.

My ex-wife got her masters total in the 123 lb Class with a 711 lb total. She deadlifted 285 lbs.

Charles Baily’s girlfriend who could squat 425 lbs, could only pull 365 lbs.

At my current gym (definitely not for serious lifters) has many women deadlifting. Very few pull more than 135 lbs. I’ve seen one pull in the mid-300’s for five reps. Maybe she could pull 400 lbs, but I never saw it. Many men deadlift there too. Most of the men train deadlifts (this was not the case in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, as only competitive lifters deadlifted) in the mid-200’s. I have seen three pull singles in the very low-500’s, and an obvious powerlifter who was there a couple months pull the mid-600’s.

From my experience, only a very small percentage of women can pull 400 lbs. It is so far from ā€œMOSTā€ that it is laughable, IMO.

Buddy of mine has two junior lifters who pull 400

Saw topic, agreed with post that this is bound to be a near-exact-repeat of the same thread about men & 600 deadlift from whenever it was, read thread anyway.

Didn’t realize 600 is some unachievable number or that there had been a thread.

I want to point out I don’t bench 315.
I don’t have a build for deadlifts, raw sumo destroyed my body, I can’t conventional for crap ( well used to not be able to but lately it’s felt good…shhh don’t tell my sumo )
My heaviest raw squat when I was raw was like 515 at 181 with that 600 deadlift.

I’m 232 currently and squat 730+ in multiply, bench 430 something single ply and deadlift like 630. None of this is to say I’m strong but just to point out that there are numbers that are attainable if you’re willing to put in the work and the time for them.

I found for raw bench ( it’s been increasing ) the more I use the axel bar the stronger it gets. Also if I only bench raw every few weeks heavy and then keep the supplemental speed/RE work up weekly it goes well.

This is a strength sport and specifically a powerlifting thread so you’re damned right I think most women can pull 400 and most men can pull 600. If I can do it, others can. Is ā€œmostā€ a realistic number, probably not but this isn’t a realistic hobby, it’s stupid, bad for the body and terrible on the construct of ā€œnormalā€ strength.

@Pinkylifting @aldebaran @mnben87 the get bigger was mostly tongue in cheek but there is something to be said for adding 10lbs of muscle to the body. you’re going to get stronger, there is no way you ā€œcan’tā€ get stronger with more muscle.

Yes if you add 50lbs of quick ā€œweightā€ chances are you won’t get a whole lot out of it. There is a saying by I think it was Matt Ladewski - push your weight until your deadlift regresses, back off a bit and stay there until your deadlift increases.

Weight increase doesn’t mean instant strength increase and it doesn’t mean get fat, unless you just like being fat ( hi it’s me )
