At last Friday’s K-1 kickboxing event 6’3" 355lb Bob Sapp (never done a steroid cycle in his life, yep.), upon bludgeoning his opponent with giant hams that pass for fists, called out Mike Tyson who just happened to be ringside.
Well, Mike got in the ring, had some words with Bob before both of them had to be “restrained”.
Better action than WWE, though the acting is much worse. Did anyone watching see an elderly promoter with spikey grey hair and a cheshire grin?
So it seems that K-1 has realized the only way to break into the American market is to promote a freak show.
Who here would lay down $30 for a PPV fight of Sapp taking on Tyson?
Who would KO whom?
in a no-holds-barred match?
This will not be keeping me up nights…but still fun to imagine
Sapp would get KO’d by Tyson in boxing or K-1. MMA would be a totally different story. Sapp got knocked down by Kimo so I doubt Tyson would have much of a problem. A better matchup would be Tyson vs Crocop in K-1. It will never happen though.
Despite Mike’s problems, he’s still a top pro when it comes to punching. If he faced Sapp in K-1 I don’t think Sapp would stand a chance, Mike would knock him out in the first or second round.
You know, in the years of mixed martial arts I’ve seen some decent boxers. Even a few pros. But never any high ranked pros. I always wondered what it would be like if you took someone like Oscar De La Hoya or Roy Jones Jr. and trained them in ground fighting if they could tear it up in Pride or UFC… We’ll never see that happen though because there just isn’t enough money. A guess Mike Tyson is a possibility though… since he’ll take money anywhere he can get it right now.
You’re basing the fact that he’s never done steroids on what? The fact that he says he hasn’t? Besides, it’s irrelevant if he’s used or not. I was just curious on what you base your claim on.
Sapp will do K-1 and MMA a huge disservice by representing both organisations when he’ll get KTFO by Tyson. It will confirm what many people think about both sports; that they are nothing but talentless ‘toughman’ competitions.
If K-1, Pride or UFC have any dreams of gaining popularity in North America they better send one of their most talented, skilled and exciting players into such a huge spotlight.
Secondly, the match should not be under boxing rules, just like it shouldnt be under strict BJJ tourny rules. In both cases the rules would hinder one of the fighters too much. The match should be under MMA rules. Its the only event that let’s everyone use their strong points.
Thunder, I had assumed that the statement about never doing steroids was sarcasm, but if it’s not, I have a healthy dose of reality to dish out if anybody needs any.
Has anyone seen the “Beyond the Glory” on Tyson? It’s a really good show, definitely worth watching. It runs now and again on foxsports.
Mike isn’t a human being, he’s an animal, a bull, a ram, mayhaps a wolverine. He was wired wrong from childhood and everything he’s done and trained for has accentuated that. I think Sapp will loose. He can be big and bad and 300+ lbs of swirling beef but Mike will rock this dude just once and it will be over. I’d like to see this thing come together. I don’t consider myself a Tyson fan, but more of an onlooker. It’s hard to avert your eyes when a trainwreck occurs, yeah?
The “no steroid” quip was most definately sarcasm. C’mon, 355 lbs and a six-pack?
MMA rules would be an ideal forum for these two, but theres a snowball’s chance of that happening.
k-1 or boxing rules it doesn’t matter as Sapp doesn’t kick. Tyson most likely would take Bob out with 2 or 3 well timed punches.
Train wreck - exactly! Thats the factor K-1 is tapping into. Even having Kimo, who displays little if any standup skill, against Bob, because of his UFC “fame” suggests the challenges K-1 faces in the US.
In Japan K-1 fills the Tokyo dome no problem, and the public has some idea of what skill is involved and appreciates the fighters. Same goes for MMA.
Meanwhile dumbass spectators in the ol US routinely shout “are ya fuckin or fightin?!” when it goes to the ground.
Its no wonder every fighter dreams of being invited to Japan.
monday morning rant over. need to goto the gym.
Still, the sight of Bob bumrushing Tyson would be pretty cool.
Hey Brad, thanks for asking- was gonna write a thread about “loving your gym”.
After searching around I joined Mavericks in Ventura (used to be the Gold’s here). Absolutely love it!
In fact I’m off in an hour to “play” some jiu-jitsu. 2 brown belts under Rickson Gracie have informal classes there which are a blast (Chris Saunders, one of Rickson’s senior instructors has a school down the road in Oxnard).
Jeremy Jackson (of King of the Cage and IFC champion) trains at the gym as well. Super nice guy and he has invited me to train with his MMA team, soon as my damn foot heals enough.
1st thing I did after joining was do too much too soon and mess up my foot.
