Irishman's Training & Nutrition

That’s the spirit man! I’m sure you’ll love it!

Just remember, at the end of the day, broken down and tired from all the training. When you don’t want to go to the gym; I was there, I was in the gym real late in the night after a whole day of rigorous combat practice, having eaten sub 1000 Calories during the whole day. Maxing out to goddamn Sweet home Alabama

That’s one of the best training memories I have.

If I could do, you sure as hell can do it.

23 days out from RMC-D

Training has been going well. I just got back from my longest run to date which was around 6km. I took it easy until the last kilometre which I than started to pick up the pace. The last 400m or so I was running hard. Cardiovascular system recovered very quickly from that.

I have been going to the gym 4x a week. Legs, push, pull, OH push. I have ditched back squatting for the time being in favour of front squats and deadlifts. Also discovered cable lateral raises which are so nice! I don’t think I will ever do another DB lateral raise again in my life!

Sleep deprivation has been going ok. Nothing crazy here as I’m still working a job that requires a fair bit of concentration throughout the day. Usually go to bed at 10pm, up at 4am, 3x a week, and up at 5am 3x a week with a re-sleep on Sunday (yes it’s a thing ok!).

Started cold acclimatisation techniques as well. Canberra is a lot more frosty than where I live and I don’t want to be underprepared for sub zero temperatures. Cold showers, minimal jumpers and sleeping with just 1 blanket is how I’m going about this. Just trying to expose myself to the cold as much as possible.

I’ve been doing a lot of research into human body adaptions and the common theme is that our body really does love being in discomfort most of the time. A comfortable lifestyle is the worse thing you can do for your overall health. Very interesting.

I’m sure you are well aware of the positive affects of lifting and cardio for your heart, lungs, metabolism, energy systems etc

Another example is cold therapy. By subjecting the body to shockingly cold water, the body responds by improving the immune system, strengthening the vein and artery reflex and (supposedly) improves mood, confidence and energy. It is also good for the hair and skin. It’s also meant to improve resistance to cold weather which is the primary reason I am trying it.

Other uncomfortable practises such as yoga and meditation can aid muscle recovery and mobility (obviously) and it can also help improve your circulatory system and digestive system. Claims have been made that deep breathing and meditation can unlock the ability to control you hormones such as adrenalin, cortisol and serratonin.

I don’t believe everything I hear but a lot of this stuff has been studied in labs and hospitals by sceptic professionals. Quite interesting.

Sounds good. I start my showers warm, wash myself, psych myself up, than turn it to full cold. The 1st 30 seconds (although now it’s only about 15 seconds) are easily the hardest. The key is staying in until the cold water doesn’t feel cold anymore. A minute would probably do the trick.

Thanks mate! I’ve just been one big ball of excitement for the past month :joy:

If anyone can sympathise with you guys, it’s me. I can be working out in the heat all day and still come home to have a blistering hot shower to the point of red skin and light headedness. Hot showers are easily a highlight of my day. But turning it to cold just adds something (anxiety? Haha) to it.

I just had my 4th one tonight and it was by far the easiest yet. Very enjoyable after about 10-15 seconds of discomfort.

20 days out from RMC-D

Swimming! I have been jogging, running, rucking and also walking a lot at work and my joints and shins are just starting to complain a bit. Now this isn’t a bad thing, just like building muscle, you need to break things down slightly and fatigue the body for it to put resources into it to make it stronger. Although I do need to give my body the time to rebuild while I continue to build my stamina. Enter swimming!

I had a really good time and definitely worked my heart and lungs. I have bought 20 swims for $80 and I have 20 days left, so guess what I’m doing every afternoon now!

Everything else is going well, weight is still around 78kg and I’m hitting the gym most mornings mostly just to get my arse out of bed at 4am.

Why not combine swimming with acclimatisation and swim in a local lake or river ??
