Insulin Insensitivity for Fat Loss

anyone know anything about Calcitonin Gene Related Peptide or CGRP. It supposedly causes calcium depletion in cells making them insulin resistant. I read that Capsaicin, found greatly in hot peppers causes a release in this compound thus making the cells insulin resistant so as not allowing more fat or carbs to enter the cells. I also read that nicotine had the same effect. Anyways it is interesting considering capsaicin is in some fat loss supplements for the reason of its thermogenic effect. any comments or explainations from bodybuilding’s think tank? laters pk

I’m aware of the theory. Apparently the theory has spawned some experiments using topical homebrews that include yohimbine, capsaicin, and nicotine. As far as I know though, there is very little reliable, unbiased feedback regarding the results these experiments at this point.

On the same note if I remember correctly, you need to keep calcium levels up for fatloss to occur. I infer it is for 2 reasons: proper muscle contraction function and to have the muscles be insulin sensitive. Afterall if the goal is fatloss and muscle recovery then you need to muscles to be insulin sensitive and the fat cells to be insulin resistant. laters pk

It’s funny, but all of the positive research is in rodents, who have lots of brown adipose tissue.

Here’s what I found for human studies: A Canadian study (represent) found that red pepper intake (which they equated to Capsaicin) decreases subsequent energy intake, but a Dutch study showed a nonsignificant trend for INCREASED fat gain following a v. low cal diet and supplementation with Capsaicin.

Of course the jury is still out, but for now, NICE CALL!!!

i would not advise people to ingest Capsaicin because i would not want the muscles to become insulin resistant plus i’ve heard some nasty stuff about ulcers or stomach cancer that come along with red pepper use. What i was refering to was localized use in certain areas. not near muscles. Obviously if someone is very lean then he would have no use for the Capsaicin. The studies that you refered to which were on rodents and humans stated ingesting the stuff. Thus the ill effects to the humans. As i stated before, supposedly the Capsaicin causes the release of that peptide which cause calcium excretion from cells which would be very bad muscle contractions. With nicotine having the same effect i find it stupid if anyone would smoke if they are into training or sports. laters pk
