Injuries.

not sure where to post this.

anyone plagued by lesser/not so serious injuries? i have an injured right elbow(havn’t benched for a while now), and two knees and two ankles that hurt from time to time, making it hard for me to work out sometime. so how do you deal with all these? and i just sprained my shoulder or something like that.

*and those of you with knee problems, what do you use for them? i have a pair of patella bands and knee guards. any of you can tell me the difference for them? thanks

Here’s a good thread on knee pain:

I don’t really have problems with my knees, but when i did injure them(torn mcl and multiple hyperextensions), focus on the muscle contraction and not going overly heavy really helped me out alot.

I have several lesser/non serious issues that plague me continuously. Example bum left shoulder from an accident falling off a ladder, overuse issues in mainly my left elbow but sometimes my right, tight neck muscles, blah, blah blah.

What i do is make sure i dring a gallon of water minimum, the longer my day, and the more i exercise, the more water i drink.

I also take a fish oil supplement along with alot of joint supplements.

Training wise, i utilize a good warmup every time no exceptions. If something is bothering me, i try to use bodybuilding methods of feeling the muscle move and controlled contractions with lighter weights, the focus being to loosen it up and get alot of blood in the area safely. Along with this i make sure my entire focus is on the muscle, and i don’t over stretch or extend certain movements, particularly the ankles and triceps.

I also stretch out real good after most workouts, staying limber and stretching really helps keep tight muscles away.

I like to massage the injured area as well, this helps get blood flow to the area and also helps loosen up tight tissues.

I also make sure i sleep as much as i can on a weekly basis.

Can’t stress enough on water intake though i find it to be really important, second being to get blood flow to the area. A warm injured area also feels much better than a cold injured area.

Just a couple of things that help me when battling the injuries i have unfortunately attained.

how does water help?

Helps flush toxins, keeps you hydrated, also helps in joint lubrication.

As for me its my back. I have been recovering from a herniated disc (S1-L5) and now that the healing process seems to be working I am just stuck in the waiting game. No dead lifts, squats, spinal loading or intense exercising in general has left me one agitated young man.

Same here brah. Im only 21 but I hate to think how im going to be feeling 5-10 years down the road if it doesn’t heal 100%.

I had complete ACL LCL and PCL reconstruction on my knee about 5 years ago after a pretty bad football injury on that shitty oldschool astro turf that some college still had…Doctors said i would never be able to do squats again and all that bullshit…i was doing squats in less than 5 months…nearly 2 years later i squatted 500lbs in a powerlifting competition…

as some people said, if your injured, stick with lighter weights until your body is ready to move on to heavier stuff, take it slow…if you try to push yourself too hard, your only gonna make that shit worse…

also, how did you get all these injuries?? both knees? both ankles?? elbow?? shoulder?? you sound like a damagae case dude! sounds like you just have to take care of your body better overall if your getting that beat up…maybe you can let us know how you got these injuries as well…

Look after your hamstrings, VMO, and train the hamstrings over both joints.

im in the same boat, 21 years of age. physical therapy has allowed me to address those same concerns about 5 - 10 years from now. keep in mind a lot of successful people, both professional athletes and average joes go about with herniated disc and bad backs. basically what im trying to get at is we can definitely still find a way to overcome this nonsense.

well, the elbow was due to weighted dips. too heavy. but i just kept pressing on. well wrong choice.

the knees and ankles are a result of basketball? well i have pretty small feet for my height, 179cm. they’re about a size 7-8. so its hard for me to change directions at fast speeds, as a result, i sprain my ankles quite alot.

i cant rmb if there was any specific incident to my knees, they just started hurting at times. the right more than my left.

the shoulder should be just a muscle sprain. hopefully itll be ok in a day more or two. haha and yea my friends always say i’ll have a new injury whenever i go out with them.

and alright ill get some linement, in singapore we dont have that stuff, but we have some trusted brands, counterpain and salonpas.

yea it sucks to not be able to train. i couldnt participate in basketball training for about 2-4 months cause of my ankle and a bad back(which has healed by now). whats worse was that everyone thought i was slacking and couldnt understand that i WANTED to be there training my ass off with them. but i did get over that so yea. hopefully youll get over your injury too, though its more serious than mine!

I only recently did my right elbow in while doing heavy tricep extensions (skullcrushers), and just yesterday rolled my right ankle during soccer - my foot went fucking sideways & i been limping all day today. I sucks balls…

I am scared as to what my elbow pain is all about - im going for a x-ray/ultrasound combo on wednesday :frowning:

haha yea i was pretty afraid too. its been injured for at least 3 months now. after a while my middle finger got numb and i figured it must have been because i was night cycling and there was too much stress on the elbow for that long period of time which must have hit a nerve or something. though its much much better now. but i still dont think ill be doing any heavy presses anythime soon. haha.

I have right elbow pain. My arm was hyperextended a couple of years ago when I was grappling. From time to time I have pain in it too. I don’t put anything on it, I just Man up!!

I figure I have enough stuff going into my body and I don’t want to use any topicals. Maybe some ibuprofin (sp) from time to time but not often. I also massage the joint regularly.

With me, it’s always something. Partly due to training, partly due to my job, and partly because I’m older now. At this very moment I’m feeling “something” in my left shoulder, both elbows, and I just went through PT for my right knee. The knee re-hab exercises eat up a lot of my time but I’m making the time so I don’t end up permanently benched.

When pain happens I think it’s all about being flexible. When I do isolated shoulder work I just know there are moves (front db raises) that will have my elbows screaming “NO!” so I adjust. And I’m adjusting all the time, in my training and throughout my work day. It’s taken me years to figure that out, that I can’t always do what everyone else is doing. You can do ART, PT, Chiropractic, massage, and whatever else is out there but, in the end, we’re all just MADE differently and we can’t all do the same thing, unless we want to become permanently disabled. The good news is that, after addressing real issues (imbalances, etc), you can usually continue with viable alternatives and adjustments.

Oh yeah,and im sick too.
