Injection Question

I’ve read multiple articles regarding proper administration of intramuscular injections and feel comfortable with the process of injection at this point, but I do have a question that I’ve been unable to get an answer on.

Right after you’ve inserted the needle, if you pull back on the plunger and do in fact see blood what is your course of action? Obviously you don’t inject, but even if you switch sites you now have a little bit of blood in with the aas. Is it safe to have a little bit of blood injected along with the aas? Should you try and purge the blood before picking a new site, or does the whole thing need to be discarded??

Simply put, your blood is YOUR blood. You have no worries. Your syringe is not contaminated in any way.

Just put out the syringe and find another injection site. Just remember to alcohol swab the new area first. Also, you might want to screw on a new needle to the barrel now that the old needle may be a little dull from your first poke. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Although it’s ok to reinject your own blood I think it wise to purge any blood from the end of the syringe.
You’ll want to aspirate at the next injection site and in the unlikely event you wind up in another blood vessel you want to be able to see it clearly.

The issue is not re-injecting your own sterile blood intramuscularly, you can inject just about any STERILE substance into your body, but injecting the juice directly into your veins where it doesn?t belong?

Actually you can pull the needle half out, change its direction and put it back in, and re-aspirate - if you don’t get anymore blood returns, you are good to go. If you are not comfortable in doing this, then just pull the needle out and re-poke like MassN. said. I find the most common needles to hit veins are the 5/8th inch insulin needles for myself.

I’ve tried something similar to what you’re talking about…When I was doing a glute inj. w/ a 23g 1.5 in. needle I aspirated and a little blood entered the syringe. I just pulled out about .25-.5in. and aspirated again and no blood, so instead of injecting at a depth of 1.5in. I actually wound up injecting at a depth of 1.25-1in.

Now when you correctly aspirate and the site is acceptable to inject, what is brought back into the syringe when you pull back on the plunger? Will the plunger not be able to be pulled back or will another liquid be present?

Bro, you’ll just see some bubbles floating around while you’re aspirating. After pulling back on the plunger, all the bubbles will subside.
