wee bit sore in the op area today, think caused by the leg raises with the medicine ball, nothing to worry about though.
BJJ Tues & Weds for an hur - injury was great, sadly I’m still sh1te.
Gym today
52kg for military 5x5
100kg 5 x 5 for squats (struggled on last set but got there - felt good)
strayed a bit on the bench - 10 reps x 60kg 5 reps 70kg 5 reps 80 3 reps 90 1 x 100kg
5 mins plank
30 x crunch with 4kg ball
20kg on stack pull throughs
weights yesterday:
5 x 5 bench 82.5kg - fine
5 x 5 squats 105kg - fine
5 x 5 military press 50kg - superset with 5 chins - all fine
No soreness at all - amazing how heavy everything feels now though!
TBH I’m not that far away rom where I was on the military press pre operation
Unless anything goes wrong (in which case I’ll update this post) I think this’s my last, hope it’s given a rough idea of what to expect following an Inguinal Hernia laprascopic operation (mesh insert) :
After 13 weeks I can now:
Squat 105 kg 5 sets of 5 - not easy but no pain associated with the operation just a case of building the weight back slowly
Military press 52k 5 sets of 5 - again relatively easy - bear in mind I was only at 62.5kg 5 x 5 pre op
Bench 82.5kg 5 x 5 although have pressed 100kg for 1 rep (relatively easy) pre op did 3 reps at 120kg
Deadlift - haven’t really got back into that as I did hurt my back a few weeks ago but was lifting 90kg with ease on a trap bar (pre op 195kg fro 1 rep)
Crunches/leg raises - go easy at first but now 60 crunches with a 4kg medicine ball are no bother at all.
Running - no issues at all - was running 10k 3 x a week about a fortnight after the op
BJJ - back into full rolling/sparring 2 months after the operation
Cycling - 10 weeks after the op went for a trail ride that nearly made me puke but the operation area was okay.
Hope this gives you some rough goals of where you can be post op. Just take it very, very easy at first - I do feel I can go heavier on all lifts but I don’t want to cause any issues with the injured area. Abyone wants to know anything specific feel free to PM me.
Cheers RH
As an update:
5th August - 15 weeks after operation back to:
4 x 90 minute BJJ sessions a week - at least 30 mins of 100% effort rolling/sparring in each of these.
Weights:
last week :
squatted 120kg (only 2 reps but getting there)
Benched 110kf for 1
Trap bar dead 120kg for 5
Military press 65kg for 5
running 10k is a breeze (was doing that 10 days after op)
Yesterday cycled 30k
In short pretty much back to full fitness but strength is at circa 70% of what it was, bearing in mind almost 6 weeks with no weights that’s to be expected.
Cheers
RH
Hey robinhood,
I’m getting inguinal surgery on my left side, open mesh tension-free, by one of the best hernia surgeons in Canada, it’s all he does.
I’m hoping for a swift recovery like yourself.
I’m 25yrs old. Surgeon is Sep 13.
I’ll keep you updated… gulp
My surgeon is pretty cocky that I’ll be able to lift whatever the hell I want after 4 weeks. Including deadlifting, etc.

7 months after operation - still get a dull ache but back to full sparring (Muay Thai) and 100% rolling (BJJ) Lifting - still not back to same weight but that’s due to not lifting as often as I was before.
In short - 99% recovered.
