how should I accomplish this?? Just set up a few different drills and get better at them every week, or is there any sort of tried tested and true method?? Basically I gas out in minutes, and start at the firefighting academy in one month. All the strength in the world won’t help me if I can’t climb a flight of steps haha
I’m no expert, but in my experience what’s helped with my endurance has been interval training over increased periods of time.
If you have access to the stairmill at a gym, do that on the interval setting - just do 10 mins alternating between 10 (easy walk up stairs) and then 20 (running up stairs) and then increase the amount of time you do it over the next month(s).
Otherwise what I do is, 10 mins ss running, 15 mins HIIT, then back to ss running for as long as I want - but I play soccer, so different animal I’m sure.
run stairs , non stop for as long and as hard as you can
op
first off, why did you wait so long to train to get in shape for the academy? you should have been training for a year getting ready for this test.
i would ask the captian what the test consists of and train as close to that as possible.
all endurance training is different…your heart and lungs are strong and in fine shape, but can your body move fast in different events???
i bike race, and i’m super fit… at bike racing. if i had to run, my running muscles would need to be conditioned to move that way.
ask the dudes in charge what the events are and train those movements.
good luck

well I have anywhere between 6 and 8 months before I face the test, this training program is 3 months at the academy, and is simply for the credentials. I started doing some jogging and the like just to prepare for that, and realized that even though I may be big, strong, and lean, I am not in good shape. I will be continuing increasing my endurance until I actually come against the test, I just know it will be difficult going through the training so out of shape. I also realized I don’t really know what I am doing!
Thanks for the help so far gents.
I think people don’t like running because of the impact. You’re not actually exhausted it’s just you’re feet begging to stop. Do bike riding to ease yourself into it and build up to 1000 jumps on a jump rope to get used to the impact aspect. Above all mix it up to avoid getting bored.
