Incorporating Olympic Lifts into training program

I have been training on and off for the better part of my adult life. These days my strength lifts are limited to the Squat and Bench Press which i ramp up to either a 3rm or 5rm on alternating weeks.

I have started to incorporate one olympic lift variant the Power Snatch from blocks and two assistance exercises the Snatch grip high pull and Push Press. My question is do i base my sets/reps and percentages off a 3RM for the Power Snatch and a 5RM for the Snatch grip high pull and Push Press or is it better base it off a 1RM.

My answer is no substitute for CT. Ignore it if you want.

Olympic lifts are all about technique. If the technique is not solid, it doesn’t matter what your maximum is or what you do on other lifts.

Once you have the technique down with just the bar or with very light weights, increase it gradually until you slow down or cannot maintain good technique. Increase volume with 60-80% of that. Don’t neglect your joints - I find snatch grips hard on my shoulders - do plenty of stretching and make sure your mobility is adequate before doing higher volumes.

Why do you want to Olympic lift? Great to include one lift in your routine to work on your power, acceleration, to expand your skill set, if you enjoy them, to improve, just because. But they won’t necessarily make you big and strong. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
