Incline Dumbbell vs. Smith incline

I’d like to hijack this for a second, while we’re on the incline subject. My left shoulder is a little messed up and the only incline movement I can do is the HS seated incline press. Is there any way back to using the barbell or dumbbells?

How did you mess it up? Are you doing anything to rehab it? Anytime you introduce a new stimulus or one that you haven’t done in a while you have to be careful, especially if you have an injury. First off I would recommend figuring out what is wrong with your shoulder and if you may be able to find some exercises to help strengthen it. Second, I’d start light most likely with the smith machine. When pressing most people will push and let their shoulders roll forward which really disrupts the scapulae. Learn how to press away from the bar, keep back tight, etc etc.

Start doing some exercises to strengthen your rotator cuff because I’m assuming that is what’s bothering u as that is normally the case. Then I would start with some light floor press because it limits range of motion and is easier on the shoulders. Then slowly work your way back to incline smith machine, low weight higher reps and see how it feels.
