In Season Rugby Training Help/Critiques

Hey guys, and Jim

So I am now entering rugby season along with college starting next week. Try-outs begin Monday night and I wanted a little help with programming. Unfortunately, we do not have any sort of S&C coaching or training given. The team isn’t really given much by the school. I have read some of Jim’s old articles and I am going to be doing 2 training sessions a week along with practices. My current planned lay out is as follows:

Workout A

Warm Up (Soft tissue work, dynamics)
CNS (Jumps or Throws)

Hang Cleans 3x3-5
Squats 531
Bench 531
Assistance work (lunges, rows, pulldowns, arms, and core) 3x8-12

Workout B

Deadlift (Trapbar as its less taxing on my back) 531
Push Press 531 (swapped out OHP since I’m a lifter in the line outs)
Assistance work (same as workout A) 3x8-12

Sundays are normally an off day from games or practice so my thoughts were to do light conditioning like biking/jogging 20-40mins and foam rolling. Training sessions would most likely fall on Mondays and Thursdays. Just wanting any feedback or advice for any changes/modifications and if I should still be doing lifting @ 70% or higher main lifts???

Appreciate any feedback!

I’ve said this many times before:

Your IN-SEASON program is 100% determined by your OFF-SEASON program. Since I have no idea how you trained or who trained you, I cannot answer your question about in-season training.

You have to find efficient means of training in-season so that you are stronger during the season; or unless you are a high end athlete, maintain. I will say that you do a shit ton more work than we do in the in-season. But again, you are playing a different sport, a different practice schedule and have a very different off-season program.
