I’m tring to cut a little weight. How important is the 93% lean / 7% fat meat? Problem is its fucking expensive. 1.99 a lb for 80/20 and 4.59 a lb for 93/7, I didnt even look at how much the 97/3 was. I’ve ended up buying ground turkey the past few days because its leaner then the 80/20 and alot cheaper then the 97/3. It doesnt taste anywhere as good as the beef though.
google altenn brown from Good eats on the food network.
if you bake the meat, get low fat if you must…
however, when you just brown the beef in a pan on the stove, you require 15 to 20% fat inorder to keep from burning it. thats why 80/20 is so popular. if you try to brown 93/7 you are going to have to add cooking oil of some sort, and while it may be healthier, your not gaining a whole lot.
If the fat really scares you, strain it and rinse it off…
I just dump it in a bowl and go to town with my glass of whole milk… but to each his own…
that saturated fat and cholesterol is good for testosterone anyways so just buy the fattier “lean” one
Yea, I always wondered that when buying ground turkey. the 97% lean (or 99%, I forget) is about $7-8 a pound. The 93% lean is much cheaper at $4-5 a pound but has a lot of fat on the nutrition facts. I always wondered which one to get. I guess since the fat on it is mostly beneficial it won’t hurt to get the 93% lean, even though the 97% has 28g of protein per serving while the 93% has like 22g. No big deal.
I’m low carbing and need the fat to hit my calorie and macronutrient balance goals so I always buy the 80/20 (aka ground chuck).
The fat makes it taste better too.
Thanks for the responses. I was never to concerned with the fat, I’m just trying to keep my carbs down. However, if you look at most of the articles on here they talk about 93/7. I’m trying to cut some weight right now so I wasn’t sure if it was that important. If it isn’t I’m gonna go back to 80/20 next time I’m at the store. Thanks.

If your trying to cut weight its still an issue of total calories…and 80/20 would have more ounce for ounce do to the saturated fat.
If you dont mind buying lean, just buy it and add healthy fats. olive oil, fish oil, keep the calories where you want them and have high protein, but this way you control the macros.
