LOL. Hey, I don’t really care one way or another what anyone does. Really, it does not bother me.
X: I threw out triceps extension because it’s not a movement you do by itself very often in anything related to everyday life. If you want to say it is functional, go ahead.
Not like it’s a set-in-stone definition, but I’d say it sure as hell falls a lot closer to ‘non-functional’ than ‘functional’ by the definition I gave.
^You wouldn’t have a barbel on your back but you could easily be lifting something heavy off the floor, have a heavy pack on and going up a hill, or playing just about any sport since the squat position (in different angles) is present in many of them.
Look I’m not here to say one is better than the other or whatever, I just think it’s stupid to pretend there’s no difference.
Should I stop training power cleans because I don’t play sports? It was that or rows, and I heard cleans are better. I’m just going for overall fuckup somebody functionality. I want to be able to bodyslam guys bigger than me.

I was kidding! I lift heavy stuff off of the floor every day at work, all day long and I have a barbell on my back 3 days a week. Also, I play sports (for fun).
To be honest, it doesn’t bother me what anyone else does. I couldn’t care less.
I just got back from a meet a couple of weeks ago. The guys there had 1000 pounds + on their backs - that, to me, is impressive. A rubber ball - not so much.

Functional muscle training is a non-athletic specific way of exercising. Those that do this are not sports oriented. They exercise to maintain their health and have an active lifestyle. The bread and butter of the gym industry.
Gyms don’t have to cater to us. We’re going or building our own. No, gyms cater to those who will pay the bills.
Doing sport orientated training is a life style choice. It has zero to do with being an average funtional person. It’s about being an exceptional individual, in a specific sport or sports. This is way beyond functional.
The problem lies in the fact that those who exercise for functionality. Think they understand all about training. In their small pathetic world they believe they are on the same playing field as those that train for sport.
Mean while they can’t even begin to grasp the mind set required to train at any level. They do however believe they do know it all. After all they exercise and have functional muscles, like there’s any other kind.

Haha. I clicked on your links too late. Realized it after
^Responding to streamline. That’s a weird definition of functional strength imo. That sounds like “minimal strength suitable for squatting down to the toilet and being able to lift the gallon of juice out of the fridge.” I just did a random google search and this is what came up: Introduction to Crossfit
