Classy of you to say something in reply. I’m serious. In my old job I worked – though usually indirectly – with mentally disabled people. (When I start teaching in a year, I will likely work with more.) Plenty of “normally-abled” (sorry for the corny term) people could learn a lot from them about discipline, working around limitations, and perseverance in the face of adversity. As a result, I’m more sensitive now to portrayals of people with mental disabilities in the media and to the way they’re treated in public. I mean, really, the biggest “retards” I’ve ever been exposed to have been frat boys – and what’s their excuse?
I’m not trying to whitewash society or regulate it. I’d hate if everyone thought the way I do and reacted to things in the same way. And I’m not naive enough to think certain situations involving mental disability don’t contain comic elements. Hell, I am curious to see Tropic Thunder (if a little conflicted about it) despite the negative press it’s gotten in that area. But as things change, some of the old jokes aren’t as funny – at least not in the same way (not just thinking about yours here).
Enough of that. I could go further but I am deep-thought-ed out.
EDIT: Only Special Olympics coverage I’ve seen has been in print. But from the look of some of the lifters, they could kick the ass of most of the posters here.
I’m an optimist – most of the time anyway. Try to find a silver lining. I’ve noted the following redeeming qualities in the Mighty Quinn:
He’s charitable – the St. Baldrick’s charity he mentions is a good one. I’ve done it three times – it is annoying asking people for money, more annoying yet getting stiffed by the inevitable few I’ve “spotted”, but the money goes to childhood cancer research and I get a gym-friendly, aerodynamic haircut out of it. Q is willing to look like an alien to help kids.
Q is persistent. There is potential for his misguided doggedness if properly channeled.
I’ve never met Irish or Q – could only guess who’d win in an actual fight. Can only guess what prompted this challenge. (A specific verbal tussle, or you just don’t like a guy so you call him out? Why is it that I only catch the tail-end of a few of the apparently many T-Nation soap-operas?)
Quinn, if you’re reading this – there are some things that are worth fighting for, and some that aren’t. There are some things you can prove with your fists (or elbows, or joint-locks), and some you can’t. You’re a fighter, you should know this. Learn discernment. Again, I don’t know exactly what started this, but if people know that they can reliably push your buttons and get you to act a certain way, then they’ve already got you beat.
