If You Were Someone's 'D'Amato'

I you could tell someone what to eat, when to eat, how to eat, what to train, where to train, how to train, etc. Practically controlling a human robot… What would you do? How would you get someone who is a nobody, and transform that person into a somebody?

Do what D’amato did but teach the fighter to respect himself and others. Let’s face it, if Tyson didn’t let himself go he wouldn’t be broke and his career probably would have been much better.

If I knew the answer to that question,
screw doing it for someone else, I’m gonna do that for me.

If you’re callin Tyson a nobody you’re way off. The guy’s a headcase but was a lean 200lbs as a 12 year old. My pop [an ex fighter] always called Tyson the most natural mesomorphic person he’s ever seen. D’amato molded him and probably should’ve reigned him in more, but Tyson was born to be the heavyweight champ. Too bad he came out the box with a few screw loose 'cause we’d probably be talking about the greatest heavyweight of all time if not for Don King and other obvious missteps.

Yes, Tyson was a truly genetically gifted.

If he would have had an excellent early education, he could have easily gone the same way like Arnold (icon, media, politics).

@op, your question is interesting in because it already implies the most difficult part, namely a totally obidient student.
If I had the time and motivation and -of course- such a student, I’d try to make sure we are building him slowly and complete. To perceive his greatest physical and mental strengths and take that further on. To be able to deal with his weaknesses. And also, to build his character and make sure other factors in his life won’t be a problem (women, relatives, bootlickers, crime etc).

D’Amato really never tried to discipline him, I think that was the biggest problem. You had some kid that really needed a father figure in his life and Cus just loved him too much to do anything. If Cus let Teddy Atlas whoop Mike’s ass a couple times it could have saved him lol.

How would you know this? Were you living in the household at the time? On one occasion Cus actually stepped outside the house and challenged Mike to fight him.

Did anyone see Tyson incredible film, Tyson loved Damato like a father, I’ve never seen Mike that emotional.

He knows this because it’s common knowledge (well not common :stuck_out_tongue: but it’s well known in the boxing world) that Teddy atlas had many-a-problem with Mike, and cus never disciplined him for it. On one occasion, Mike tried to force himself onto Teddy’s 13 year old niece, which resulted in Teddy tracking down Mike, putting a gun to his head, and firing off a round to the side.

After that Cus kicked Teddy out of the camp.

Tyson nearly pulling a “polish director”?
Gee, who would have thought this…

Cus also always treated Tyson like he was better than everyone, he treated him like he was a world champ even as a teenager. Tyson would eat other kids food and Cus would just say “it’s ok, he’s going to be champ one day.” and wasn’t disciplined for any of his actions. Teddy Atlas was pretty much the only person that tried to discipline Tyson, even though it was drastic, and he was let go.

that was the only father tyson ever had.

Listen Tyson had absolutely no confidence in himself, Tyson would cry before boxing matches. Cus had to instill this confidence in him. Mike Tyson in an interview would say who is this old white man telling me I look great, look how good I am…when Tyson would be hitting the bag and stuff.

Tyson thought he was gay…but really he understood he was just putting positive energy into him and instilling that confidence that you need to fight.
I’ve been there myself…anyone lacking confidence getting in the ring is in T-R-O-U-B-L-E.

It’s crazy how if you actually get these words drilled into your brain you start to think like that.
It’s a support system.

Again like people said before you gotta realize Tyson was A BAD KID. Labelled a sociopath as a kid…I’ve read many a Tyson books…he cut his friend on the arm and poured alcohol on it.

Tyson was the kinda kid who lacked social skills as well…when Cus came into his life he started to open up A LOT more which he never did before. Held his head high instead of looking at the ground all the time.

Coming from his environment, being in a gang, bad people, no father figure…lots of young men are headed in this direction. And some are just born bad people and it’s only a matter of time before they fuck up big time.
