thank you for your advice. based on your experience it sounds like smolov jr is the way to go if i plan on running smolov. i will definitely keep that in mind. thanks again

A friend who is unable to train upperbody due to an judo injury is currently running squats and front squats on 531. Could use something like that to squat more frequently.
So he is running squats monday and fsquats friday (or something to that degree)? that actually crossed my mind…is he running assistance work on both days?

if you have one goal to squat 400…maybe go for Bill starr 5x5 it will help your squat and help work capacity…then go to smolov if people have completed it why not you…maybe smolov jr then go to full smolov

Ya i will probably wind up running something before smolov jr to increase my work capacity. since ive only been training 6 months i have my doubts as to recovery on smolov.
This is what i am thinking… squats and front squats on 531 (2 cycles), smolov jr, then smolov
Again based on the posts i have read about peoples experience on smolov (and the nervous feeling i get in my stomach when looking at the smolov setup), i dont think i am ready. YET. if i start it i want to complete it. anyways, thanks for everyones help. this is a great forum!
your max is 295x1
Try this for 4 weeks.
warm up.
work set: 264x3x3
drop set 220x8x2
At the end of the 4 weeks go for your max again… you’ll see!
It worked for me. my max raw back squat is 484 at a bodyweight 172
best front squat 396.
best of luck

Right now i have only one goal…to squat 405lbs (currently @ 295 x 1 parallel).
That being said i’ve been looking at the programs people have seemed to use on this forum.
Smolov would make sense, but i’m not sure i have the work capacity to squat that much…the mpst i have squat is 2x per week. i also play bball on sundays so that would interfere with recovery.
I’m currently on 531 (which is a great program!) but i feel since my main goal is to up the squat then i should squat more often.
I’m sure someone has gone through this before and I was wondering what your thoughts were. Should i try to modify smolov or is there another program i should look into? Thanks
this is once per week correct? any assistance work?
glenn pendlay’s system of 5x5 got me to 405. the one where you do 5x5 across on monday, then 80% of that on wednesday & then 1 top set of 5 on friday…using that weight for monday’s 5x5. after 4-6 weeks, go to 3x3 on monday, drop the light day & top set of 3 on friday. repeat for 4ish weeks.
I browsed T-Nation last night on my mobile, and this thread popped up.
I tought I’d put in a post, even if it is an old thread.
It was an amusing read, esp. I liked:
"And I think he’ll say “If you don’t have the work capacity for Smolov, work on it. I would say the best way is by doing Smolov.” "
That’s funny! ![]()
All I can say is you need to be dedicated. Be a fighter. Then squatting strength will come. It helps to read and consume information and ask others too. See the obstacles as challenges and not as show stoppers. Always keep going no matter what!
I hope he’ll log back in and tell us what he did and if he reached it
