Ideas/Suggestions for Events

Basically a group of us at uni thought it would be a good idea to make an event so one could finally have bragging rights and that it will hopefully increase competition between us. also might make training a bit more fun and the uni gym will be recently done up (as of July) so even more reason to do it.

The weights will be reasonably light in comparison to normal strongman stuff. just for an idea of people’s 1RM’s, think highest squat is 180-185, highest dead 205-210, highest push press 100+. No idea of the other events yet. could be some incredibly strong 3rd yr edin.uni guys we don’t know about who might see this online and want to put us back in our place though lol. didn’t choose other years as we don’t know enough ppl in other years and there is bound to be some 4th years/post-grad’s who would tear the comp apart.

Point’s system will be similar to WSM I guess. If people are tied for an event the lighter person will win. Should be fairly competitive on the whole.

Obviously will be no problem doing any of the powerlifting movements and push press. Dumbells will be up to 70kg (more than heavy enough) so hopefully can figure out something to do with them in an open clear space (hopefully non-busy time) so maybe Isometric Hold, Farmers Walk, One Arm Dumbell Press (from floor).

There is a gym outside of Edinburgh (unit 20) that we can go to to try out the strongman events but that may prove difficult with timings and transportation. if it all goes well then we could try out the yoke (for time), chain drag (for time), stone load, log press, tyre flip.

Here are my thoughts so far on possible events (excuse the light weights). Obviously just for fun so no straps or aid equipment besides belts/chalk.

Squat:
3 plate (euro) (140kg) Squat for reps. Judge to check is squats are parallel. For time in 60-90 seconds.

Deadlift 400 pounds (182kg) for reps: 60-90 seconds.

Push Press/Log Press/Axle Press (depending on which is available) 80kg-90kg for reps from ground (if log/axle). 60-90 seconds.

One Arm Dumbell Press (from floor w/arm lockout): 40-45kg (60-90 seconds)

Isometric Dumbell Hold/Farmers Walk (heavy dumbells in gym) (for distance or time. Hopefully heavy enough so the strongest person would not last more than 120 seconds just for convenience)

Strongman Stuff… if we have the chance

Atlas Stones (100kg, to certain height) for reps in 90 seconds. (stone room in unit 20 makes it difficult to do more than 1 weight at same time)

Yoke Carry (uncertain of weight) 40metres (20m forward and back) for time.

Chain Drag (heaviest weight there) for time over 20m.

That’s 7 events now so more than enough. Fairly unbiased on the whole, only event taller people will have a distinct advantage is stones.

Hopefully will have someone (not competing to make it fairer) to judge.

Any thoughts/recommendations?

Will be done well into 3rd year. Late 2010 or Early 2011 (hopefully enough time for me to be fully recovered and training solidly for at least several months)

I like the sound of all of it apart from “3 plate squat for reps” lulz.

If you have access to that, I recommend either doing a log or yoke press for reps as opposed to the normal bar. You can also make an axle real cheap using 1.75" ID piping. Another option is a press medley… a keg, log, axle, bar, DB, yoke press medley would be fun and easy to set up. Pick a weight for each one and fastest time through wins.

If you only have one stone, you can do a stone for reps, or a stone for height. Stone for height is easy, pick a starting height and go up 2" at a time till only 1 person remains. Stone for reps is also easy.

Squat for reps is dangerous, tough to judge if you don’t have a squat apparatus, and all around stupid.

If you only have dumbbells, I’d recommend the farmers hold over the farmers walk. Reason is that the DBs that you have access to (and can grip) will be too light to really make the “walk” portion difficult. Hold for time is easy to set up, goes quick, and is all around painful.

Other easy to set up suggestions:
~Crucifix hold for time (you can use dumbbells, car batteries with handles, almost anything you can hold in this position to make it seem original).

~keg carry, kegs are easy and cheap to get a hold of, especially in scotland. You could do a carry medley, do a carry and load (carry 20m and load to a platform), or even a carry and drag medley where you carry and load the keg in a sled and then drag the sled

~sandbag events: easy and cheap to get a hold of

~rebar bending: pick up a few pieces of 1m rebar and bend until there is 15cm or so between the ends. Kind of a stupid event in my opinion, but for a thrown together contest among friends, it could be cool.

thanks threewhitelights, has given me a lot more useful ideas!

Wheel barrow, place cones 5 feet apart, for whatever ever dostance you want.
