I Want Big Pecs!

It’s what got me lifting in the first place. I read an article by TC and he said, “80% of you started lifting because you wanted bigger guns.” I want a big swole chest.

I’ve done german volume training. I’ve mainly done volume training - when I found Waterbury’s chest program I did that. Everything’s been high volume for me and I saw good size gains from it.

However, lately I feel like I’m stagnating. Like my chest is overtrained. But when I back off from chest training, I notice the difference in size (the lack of) real easy. And I don’t want that!

I just found Coach Thib’s chest specialization program and it seems volume oriented to me. So I guess my question is, does it sound like I should stick with high volume, or go low?

You’ve been a member here for 3 and a half years and you are asking us a question that only you can figure out by testing it yourself.

Feel free to lift in the lower rep ranges.
Just do something that your body isn’t used to and train hard. People here shouldn’t know better than you when it comes to your body.

You definitely just have to experiment and find what works best for your body. I try to think of training as a science experiment and I am my own guinea pig. I just tried to Hammer Strength bench machine for the first time in a long time this week and I could really feel that hitting my chest, so I will be keeping that as a main part of my program for a while.

Check on your nutrition, I can almost guarantee that if your gaining overall mass you’ll be gaining inches for your chest. Do squats and deads, those will help you gain overall size (if you go heavy and intense). As for chest training the following routine will work:

Day 1:

2X8-10 Dips (wider grip, leaning slightly forward)
2X6-8 DB Bench Press
2X6-8 Incline Bench Press

Day 2:

2X8-10 Push-ups (add serious weight)
2X6-8 Decline DB Press
2X10-12 Incline Flys

Take all sets to failure (you shouldn’t miss reps but go till that last very hard rep)
Follow each chest set with a back exercise set resting 90s between each exercise
Read this article “Position for Pecs”, google it. It will teach you how to perform chest exercises to take the most advantage from them.

There you have it, try this for six weeks and I guarantee your chest will grow (especially if this is different from the way you were training before)

Take a week of rest before trying this.

The day you can incline press 315_ for 10-15 reps is the day that you wont be asking how to make your chest larger.

Thanks for the feedback.

Anthro, you’re right on, man. I do know better. I’m going with DC. Thanks again.

Exactly! That’s what I was going to say. You probably aren’t going to be complaining about lack of chest size if you’re throwing some serious weight around. Get stronger. Eat more.

At 170 lbs and 2 years training experience, you arent ready for DC. Pick a basic program aimed at strength gains (5x5, ws4sb, any of Iron Addicts programs, etc) and stick with it. Here is why DC is not right for you at the moment:

  1. you are 170 lbs. DC is about knowing your body. At 170 lbs, you havent put in enough time under the iron to really know what your body can and cannot handle. And yes, 2 years is not long enough. Especially since the weight gain has been minimal. DC is designed for taking big people and turning them into freaks. Its the fastest path from point A to point B. Unfortunately for you, youre not even to point A yet.

  2. you are complaining about weak body parts at 170 lbs. This screams of newbie, ocd behavior. Exactly the opposite of what DC is designed for. Time spent getting strong and busting ass on a more basic routine will cure all of this.

Im not saying all of this to be a dick, but if I had a dime for every kid that Iv seen come onto a forum, decide they were going to DC against the advice of myself and others who have experience with the program and then burnt out or changed something because they didnt follow the advice they were given and then complained about how DC “didnt work for them”, then I would be a rich guy right now. In fact, you are likely to make better gains on a more basic routine than you would on DC at the moment.

Instead of DC, here is what you should do:

  1. Go to www.ironaddicts.com
  2. pick a routine
  3. do that routine and get stronger on it
  4. eat 4000 calories a day, more if you arent growing
  5. come back in a year and let me know that I was right because you are 25-30 lbs heavier.
