I’m Embarrassed by Americans, Disgusted Even

I would honestly say there are exceptions. Generally, I agree, but I’ve been to a few third world contries and lots of reservations and they’re not always that different.

I have never been to a reservation but I would choose that over the Congo.

Violence-wise is better - there’s not a government committing genocide (anymore), but I was referring to the poverty. Many don’t have running water, access to healthcare, etc.

I thought I’d go ahead and post this nonsense as it is trending in my neighborhood for a repeat parade.

First, let me explain my beef! Teachers in elementary, middle, preschool etc drove around my neighborhood honking their horns and waving to their students! This annoys me in the following ways:

  1. I have dogs that bark at cars honking
  2. all the dogs in the neighborhood bark
  3. I hear constant honking from EACH schools parade
  4. and ffs kids run out to see each other in groups to say hi! They flee their house like ants to Girl Scout cookies and try separating them after this mass of hysteria
  5. It is trending to repeat

I have been to a few myself, and have a friend that lives on one near where @jshaving lives (central SD). They are rough. I believe the reservation that my friend lives on (Rosebud) is/was the 7th poorest county in the US, it’s neighboring reservation (Pineridge is/was the poorest).

The average male life expectancy of a man is 47 years old, women 52-55 depending on the source (this is based on past stats, I believe the future predicted life expectancy is about 66 for someone born recently). 90% unemployment. People are unaware that basically third world countries exist within the US.

This is something we should be embarrassed by IMO.

That is not my mentality at all, this situation just has me more worried than normal because it’s not something that could potentially happen, it is happening right now. I’m not panicking in real life, maybe my posts on here give that impression but really I’m just a bit frustrated and bored. I was stuck inside all winter and now it’s spring and I’m stuck inside again, and who knows when my kids can go back to school.

Yes. Fortunately here in Ottawa we have only had 4 new confirmed cases in the past 10 days, for a total of 51. I think that if we could ban travel between cities then in a couple weeks we could start opening things up again here, anyone with a cold or cough would be sent to be tested for the virus, an economic catastrophe could be averted if the virus is no longer spreading in particular areas.

Yes, my previous comments were made before it was reported that the US now has more cases than anywhere. And there is no need for an exit strategy where a containment strategy has not yet been implemented because there is nothing to exit, you have to deal with one problem at a time and the US is behind in most places.

I can see riots and protests happening in some places in a short time, like India and South Africa. The way things are being handled in those two countries makes no sense, food shipments are being blocked in India and cops are beating people found outside - how are they supposed to get food to eat? South Africa banned sales of alcohol and cigarettes, which serves no purpose except to increase anger and frustration. As bad as the shutdowns may make things in North America or Europe, there are far worse places to be.

Well, in a place like that there is nothing left to be done but treat severe cases and prevent it from spreading elsewhere. Might as well open everything back up because the damage is already done.

This is one of the more progressive sentences I have read recently.

I don’t mean to harp on the subject, which I do sometimes - it’s important to me. I just think very few Americans are aware of it and that’s an issue, imo.

LOL. Writing is not my strong suit. I guess I was progressive on accident.

Understandable. But even though this situation is happening right now doesn’t mean the worst is guaranteed to come. If you go back and look at articles from the Great Recession many were predicting things much more catastrophic than what happened.

Definitely.

You could but what would be the point? If you reach a point where most people are sick or are too fearful of getting sick to go out “opening” things up is irrelevant. You can open movie theaters, Disneyland, cruises, etc. If no one goes it isn’t having an effect on the economy really.

I’m also not sure how might as well open everything else up jives with you saying prevent it from spreading elsewhere.

They don’t know they can use the internet to see their students?

I live in Texas smh. Edit for those of y’all who aren’t aware, occasionally someone here might say “let’s just secede from the union” now I’ll put my head in the sand for revealing that tiny bit of information

Every state has its share of bozos. Sometimes folks from my state vote in politicians who publicly identify as trotskyist socialists. I prefer to judge the shit out of individuals based on the content of their character (shout out to ya boy MLK), and not by the craziest nutjobs their state has to offer.

I’ve heard of multiple smaller districts that are doing the whole parade around town thing at least here in Kansas.

I couldn’t work with people who think that’s a good idea.

I just googled teacher parade around town coronavirus and damn it’s places all over the nation.

From the looks of it a lot of it might depend on how they are doing it. When I think parades I think of floats with multiple people on them. If it’s teachers driving their own cars with windows down while kids are outside and away from each other it’s probably fine.

But it seems to be tempting fate to an extent to throw a parade and then hope people don’t defeat the purpose of it. Just situations where you hope people are being smart.

Those teachers should be working.

Latest update for any gun owners, it is ok in Texas to get your “essentials”. We may be on lock down, but lock and loading is still ok! Gotta love the concepts of either shooting the virus or protecting your “fortress of toilet paper” with more guns and ammo.

However, if I need my protein, I might need a gun!?! If I need food…Could things get to that point?

On the protection side, I’m not a huge fan of firearms, but crime is growing and someone “attempted” to steal my Charmin Ultra Soft from my shopping cart.

At this very moment, I realized, I need to watch my sarcasm with my neighbors regarding the parades…
