what is it about Rippetoe that makes so many of you recommend it over Westside? IS Rippetoe better for size and Westside more focused on strength/endurance?
The Westside programs are for powerlifting, so they’re trying to add more neurological connections in their muscles for more strength, though mass may be a side effect.
Rippetoe’s program is for hypertrophy, though more strength will be a side effect. [/quote]
What the fuck?
Hey Otep, I’ve been lifting pretty seriously for a few years and after my recent bout with mono I’m back to this guys stats (22, 6’1’, 175, 14% bf). I was thinking of following USMCTrojan’s Physique Clinic workout to get from 175 to 190, and then changing over to CrewPierce’s workout to get from 190 to 200. Rather than make a new thread, I thought I would ask given the similarity between physiques.
Rippetoe’s program is not about hypertrophy. It is about strength.
Hypertrophy is achieved through high rep sets. 5 reps is not geared (specifically) toward hypertrophy. In fact, it is a balance of strength work (to get strong) and hypertrophy (to build muscle, which will also help get you strong).
If you want to get big and strong, buy Starting Strength and follow it. Squatting 3 times a week will add mass very quickly and induce hormonal responses the likes of which you probably have never experienced.
