Nephorm, modern classicism is just another way of saying haughty, no-talent, dogshit. I should have been a “modern artist.” I would select four colors, hang from a rope, and throw the colors around me at random. Then I would make up some interpretation and try and sell it. I would accuse anyone who disagreed with me of having no eye for art.
Modern classicism and modern art are not synonymous, nor even similar (except in some rare cases). Modern classicism seeks to emulate and reinvent the forms of classical Roman and Greek arts, much as Renaissance artists did hundreds of years ago. Ulysses is the retelling of Homer’s Odyssey; Joyce believed this to be the most complete story ever told. So, he created a modern version that is heavily weighted with classical symbolism and imagery. Sylvia Plath was similarly a classicist, though less blatant about it. In fact, much of the poetry and literature that have come to be considered “classics” really are based on the classics (including the New Testament… compare Dionysian myth with the life of Jesus, and notice some interesting parallels)!
