If I attempted to do that, I’d get so fucking bored that I’d leave in 15 minutes and go to the donut shop or something. My training has to be goal-oriented at all times to hold my interest and that means more reps or more weight on every set (unless its a planned “de-load”). I’ve investigated the theory, and I can’t seem to ever duplicate the muscular stimulation, fatigue, ache, or pump that I get from pounding a set of 350 x 12 on the bench or 120 x 10 DB military with a “squeezing, mind-muscle connecting” set of 275 x 12 on the bench or 80 x 10 on the military DB. It just doesn’t fit my personality or my beliefs in weight training. I’m still a damn bodybuilder though :).
You saying just get strong as fuck? psssssh…that can’t possibly work, brah!

maybe, but that wasn’t quite what I meant.

consider the humble squat. lets make it a back squat.
you can (eventually) move more weight in the squat by driving the weight up by pushing your hips through under the bar on your ascent.
in other words, by using your glutes and your hammies.

i see a lot of people squatting where they shift their weight forward more onto the balls of their feet so they are using less glute / hammie and more quad. sort of pulling themselves up with their quads rather than pushing themselves up with their glutes and hammies.

from a bodybuilding perspective… it would seem to be optimal to drop the weight in order to train hip drive out the hole (it would work your glutes / hammies better). assuming of course one is doing back squats in order to work ones glutes / hammies rather than one having some other purpose.

from an olympic weightlifting perspective… it would seem to be optimal to drop the weight in order to train hip drive out the hole (it will ultimately be possible to move greater weights in this fashion).

from a powerlifting perspective… it would seem to be optimal to drop the weight in order to train hip drive out the hole (it will ultimately be possible to move greater weights in this fashion).

… hopefully you get the idea.

of course to the person who is in the gym to show off rather than to actually improve and make progress all they care about is getting the weight up any old how. of course olympic weightlifters and powerlifters award no points for style in competition - but they do care rather a lot about training proper activation in training - because proper recruitment will enable them to lift the most weight at the end of the day.

i do get that time under tension is more important for bodybuilding than other strength sports. e.g., i do my rows in order to develop explosive lat contraction. i use greater weight than i would if i cared about maximal activation and wanted to do sets of 10 or so for greater time under tension. the way i do my rows i take a deep breath and explode up then basically drop the weight (negatives give me DOMS which gives me stiffness which gives me slowness for olympic weightlifting).

but… something i have been wondering about (and come to the bodybuilding forum because i actually care to learn) is whether it might be useful for me to do things more bodybuilding-style at least some of the time. that the focus on control of individual muscles and on maximal muscular contraction might well have a pay-off with respect to balancing that with motor control patterns for compound movements. might eventually have a pay-off with respect to strength. perhaps…

BB squat =/= oly squat =/= PL squat…not even close. How do I know?..look at the elite in all 3 categories, and they are completely different exercises.

Hello.
i’m a dude too.

how’s your lifting going?

i thought the bird was the first with peanut butter andy. guess i was wrong.

this is a bizarre thread…

whatever… focusing on the muscle contraction (sucking it up and lightening the load on lat pull-downs) helped me get stronger at chin-ups… i do think there is something to this.

how you doing today lisa?

it’s nice that my thread is like e-harmony for men who lift weights, not weightlifters (distinction noted)mind you.

i’m letting this thread die. i’m sure gregon will post soon enough, telling me i’m wrong about my analysis and perceptions of him (i totally made it up, complete bullshit, but whattya bet i’m spot on). He’ll go on to tell me that I come off like a toddler or teenager, fixated on linguistic folly - gonads and strife, fart jokes, boobs, salami sandwich sexual inuendo.

i wanted this to be a good thread, my OP was thoughtful…i meant that shit!

this is why we cannot have anything nice in the bodybuilding forum.

*edit - response to alexus - trained arms tonite, good workout, i find w/ arms i warm up doing a blood flow exercise to get my joints ready, tonite pressdowns and reverse grip pressdowns, based on the vid i bumped my rep range to 15-20. heavy movement for triceps was pressdown plate loaded machine. i go back in forth between heavy movements and volume/pump/blood flow movements w/ most arm training.

w/ biceps lately i do less total exercises, usually three, maybe four, but have decreased the weight after a primary heavy biceps exercise (as mentioned). in the secondary biceps exercises i like to bump the volume w/ drop sets to push and extend my rep range.

there, i’m jumping ship.

ONE MORE POST.

Andy Peanut Putter (I miss spelled but think I like that even better!) here is my ode to you.

shitty camera photo, arm photo, since i trained arms a few hours ago! a bit blurry, check. orange avant garde chroma choice, check. nipple + chest hair…not today. too much suspect stuff in this thread to show my nipples.

I love it when people predict failure then come back in the same statement and say they will be right. Makes no sense.

Fun thread

I’m from this camp!

I’m not exactly clear on what the initial idea behind this thread was supposed to be, but if I’m right and it’s to differentiate between “weightlifters” and “bodybuilders” while stigmatizing the former as a group of people who are just spinning their wheels in the weight room, then I strongly disagree.
There are a myriad of reasons to lift weights, and I think for many these reasons are much more personal than simple hypertrophy, vanity, strength, etc.
I’ve lived most of my life in four-year increments (high school, college, army) and the sense of control weight lifting gives me is the greatest catharsis I have found while being subject to the whims and schedules of others. I’m not so naive to think things are going to change when I get out of my current situation, but I can always count on the weights to be there. Every pound I can press above my head or lift off the floor is another pound of the universe I can subject to my control. This is why I lift weights. I get bigger doing it, but I’m not a bodybuilder.

It’s not.

Seriously, people, the point of the OP is really, truly, absolutely, honestly, NOT that hard to grasp…

…but then, maybe that’s why some people are trying so damn hard to miss the point just to nitpick.

Jesus Christ in a fuzzy bunny suit. THE POINT OF THE THREAD IS NOT TO STIGMATIZE ANYONE.

yes, i get it, the weights are a staple to all of us, our pillow, our fuzzy blanket but the OP is about folks, bodybuilders, anyone who’s goal is to grow and stimulate the targeted muscle.

Both approaches, heavy ass lifting, recruitment of synergist effort/muscles to push cock throbbing maximal poundages and a more focused squeeze TUT approach as to make veiny cosmic vascular surge nubret rainbows romances happen, both of these things work!!! fuck they both work, but if you are skinny little guy the second approach will not make you HHUUGGGEE, you will become a vascular 155lber instead of a vascular 150lbs. (someone please bring up an arguement that vascularity is determined by diet and bf% + genetic predispostion) lets fuck this thread in the ass some more, it seems not many can detect my sarcasm!

i’m not angry or a whiny bitch but i’m writing like one right now.

the point of the OP was simple but worth discussing. the rest of this thread is me just me itching my balls. if you are hitting a wall in the gym, re-evalutate your approach, be honest about your efforts and what you are doing, this is the point.

oh, fuck weightlifters too by the way. there is bodybuilding and powerlifting, you weightlifters are like a transexual in the cheap dress standing in the corner of the bar (i hang out at cool bars). bla, bla.bla…(i’ll beat you to your shitty retort) weightlifting was actually around first blablabla.

fuck this thread.

i’ll be back in like 10minutes, or at least until i’m not self amused anymore.

this thread is like that listening and comprehension game we played as kids where you whisper something in someone’s ear and then in travels down a chain of people becoming something completely different by the time it reaches the fat kid at the end of the line.

“billy likes tuna fish sandwiches” has somehow become - “blow a goo load on ms. donaldson’s apple strudel!” i suppose it’s been partially me to blame whispering the wrong shit on purpose (it terms of this thread being derailed), but as mentioned, i got itchy balls. metaphor.

It amuses me that when people inform you that your posting style doesn’t sync up with what one would expect from an individual your age, your first response is, “Why? Because I don’t press the ‘shift’ key when I type??”
