A 49-year-old woman collapsed and died on the floor of a waiting room at a Brooklyn psychiatric hospital and lay there for more than an hour as employees ignored her, according to the New York Civil Liberties Union, which on Tuesday released surveillance camera video of the incident.

The apathy of groups. So dangerous.
Lots of research in the psychology field has been done on this. Scary stuff.
This story is f’ing tragic.
On a related note, I sometimes wonder if there is something wrong with me for often being the one to go in the other direction opposed to “the group”.
It is like follow the leader syndrome. Some people seem incapable of being the front runner in a situation. If the person next to them does nothing, they will simply follow suit.
This situation is a little different though. This is pure apathy and disregard for life. You see the same mentality in some retirement homes.

She was involuntarily admitted to a mental hospital but collapsed and died an hour later on the waiting room floor?
How was she still in the waiting room if she was admitted? If she wasn’t yet admitted who was with her?
Beyond the callous disregard the hospital employees apparently showed for her well being I don’t understand the situation.
It looks like she was admitted but they hadn’t done any treatment on her yet. The fact that they went back and tried to cover this up in her medical records makes it look even worse. Did they not know about the video camera?
In another context this might be shocking but in a mental hospital it doesn’t seem so unlikely to me that people might exhibit that sort of behavior when they were well at times in search of attention or something. Though it seems there was negligence by the staff before and after the incident, I don’t fault anyone else in the waiting room for not wanting to get involved with some unknown person in the admissions room of a mental hospital without being 100% sure that it was absolutely necessary.

On some level, I can agree with that…but being in an admissions room means you don’t know what is wrong with the patient. It would be a huge mistake to assume that a new patient (even in a mental ward) was faking in any way.
If this were a patient who was historically known to fall out and lay on the floor for hours for no reason, then I could see ignoring this woman a little.

Sometimes it takes hours after being admitted to actually get to your room. It all comes down to bed availability. Once a gender appropriate bed is available and the room is clean the patient can be physically taken to his/her room. At least this is how things work in a non-psychiatric hospital.

They admitted her but left her in the waiting room? It just seems weird, especially for a mental patient involuntary admission. It seems like they would leave her in a locked room, not a waiting area. She was admitted 24 hours earlier. Looks like a series of major mistakes nad then they tried to cover it up!
There are some crazy fucking people in this world. People probably thought she was just taking a nap waiting to be called in. I know I have seen crazier…

This kind of stuff just pisses me off. How can you see someone lying on the floor and not at least ask them if they are OK?
I wonder how many lawyers are wrestling each other for this case?

Well, they DID kick her a few times.
What more can you ask for?
Apparently kicking her was too much…even THAT took like an hour.
i’ve heard about this and recent stories in the news has me questioning society and human principles lately, in australia it seems like parents are killing there own children, the last three weeks there has been about 4 reports of this happening, a husband killing his 70 yr old wife of 25 yrs, at least theres other people that can see this is wrong

That is because they simply don’t give a shit. These were city workers I believe, and in my experience city workers are the worst types of employees you can have. They are typically uneducated. They are mostly union, so they don’t give a fuck if the job they do is good because the union will back them. I am not surprised at this because I know they just didn’t give a fuck what happened. They were probably on break and couldn’t be bothered.
