Go to powerliftingwatch.com and look under the link “Powerlifting by state”. At the bottom of the page there will be a list of meets in your state of choosing. They will list which fed each meet is sanctioned by. You can then check those feds records on their websites. PLWatch has links to them too.
Illinois is a good state for powerlifting. I believe USAPL puts on a few meets there. The APF was born in Aurora at Ernie Frantz’s gym and there are couple APF meets near Chicago every year. SLP has usually put on several meets in southern IL and southern IN.
What you get out of gear really depends on you. The tighter your gear is and more you specialize your training for it, the more you will get out of it.
As for kiddie records- fuck it- lift men’s open. You’re handling grown folks’ weight anyways.
I would say that you would fare fairly. Whereabouts in Illinois are you? I know there aren’t any meets in central Illinois for quite a while (unless you count SLP), but Chicago is putting on an APF meet soon. There is also an APA meet in Indianapolis in February.
