How to Get Out of a Leg Trap?

I know how to prevent getting into one, but sometimes chit still goes wrong. How would you get out of one besides punching awkwardly or trying to pull your leg back? maybe you could jump use your bodyweight and turn it into a really awkward takedown?

Oh and just to clarify I’m talking about when you throw a kick

  1. Get your hips back underneath you! Get them down and away from your opponent! He’s trying to jack you up, and get close. Get down and away! Do not jump into him, do not elevate your hips!

  2. Unbalance him! He’s gonna stand up tall, trying to jack your leg up. Push his head away! Elbow his face!

-Whizzer!!! If he’s got your left leg, throw a deep “overhook” with your left arm over his right. Use this “overhook” or whizzer, to trap his arm and shoulder, then lean hard on it as you fight your hips away. Google whizzer takedown defense

  1. Try to pull your trapped leg out! Maneuver your trapped leg to the “outside” of his leg or body. Don’t let him hold your leg across his chest. Work your leg to the outside of his body and try to “leverage” away, by pushing your shin into him, and driving his hips away from your hips.

Set up kicks better.

thanks man good answer

I love some good 'ol wrestling!

FlatsFarmer makes good points. However, your opponent has a serious advantage anything you try to do can be countered if you are not fast enough. If I were the opponent, I would expect the overhook and shift in weight. I would immediately try to whip my right foot around, and snake my left calf under your only supporting leg and pop you over, sort of like a weird inside tai otoshi (i guess it would be an ouchi otoshi but there’s no such thing). Then I run the risk of you pulling guard etc but I’m ready for that too since its your only option at that point, I’d just have to slam you hard to jar you enough to break the overhook and pass immediately. This is one option for me and there are others.

The point is, if any grappler get a hold of you and you stand there on one foot, you’re going to the ground one way or another, there’s many options for the grappler from such a bad position. You really need to set up kicks better.

A couple other things to try:

  1. If the opponent only has your leg in their hand and not wrapped deep in their elbow (for instance if they caught a leg kick), you can sometimes just turn away and kick your leg out (turning towards your opposite side should twist the foot and weaken his grip allowing you to just pull your leg out). Just beware that you will momentarily turn your back to your opponent so you have to be ready for them to try to chase you down.

  2. If the opponent has your leg deep, if at all possible you want to place the shin of the trapped leg to the outside of your opponent’s thigh (on the side they are holding your leg), and get your hips back (like FlatsFarmer said) and down to make it harder for them to drive your though into a double, step in and sweep your supporting leg out, or pull your leg to the inside where you are really in trouble). Once there:

-pushing down on the back of their head and framing can be a good defense and can often facilitate the “turn away kick out” defense I mentioned above

-instead of just wizzering (which is a good defense) put in your wizzer but also reach down and grab your opponent’s far arm right at or above their elbow and then quickly reach down and cup your other hand over your wizzer hand from the outside (assuming they have the leg held with both arms). At this point your wizzer arm should be under both of their arms cupping their far elbow and your other arm should be over both of their arms cupping your wizzer hand (and thus their far elbow). Once in this position pull up with both hands on their elbow while simultaneously picking your trapped leg down. This should result in an armbar effect and cause them to want to let go of the leg; at which point you will end up with both of their arms trapped under your wizzer side armpit. The easiest tradition from there is to arm drag to their back on their far side.

Hope this helps.

Russian arm drags!
Leg arm bars!
Cross face so deep you grab the back of their upper arm!
Deep sprawls into front headlocks!
Reverse elevators!

You guys get me so keyed up!

I guess the important thing is to MOVE! Then keep moving! Go one direction, when he reacts to it, go the other direction. In a scramble, you both make mistakes or over reach. Keep moving, keep improving your position! Get back to your base, grab a wrist, lean on him, or try to create space, just don’t stop.
