Ok, Here are my little bits of experience on this subject.
Many years ago, when I was a uni student, I used to work nightclub doors to make a bit of extra money.
There are a couple of observations I would make about violence in the real world, and please bear in mind that these were the days before MMA got popular, and there were few issues with people carrying knives.
1: On the subject of people not going after the big guys. I’m sorry but that never worked. If some belligerent idiot is looking for trouble, he generally does’nt care what you look like. The interesting thing about where I worked was that we had a lot of big blokes. There was a guy called Rob who last year came 4th in UK’s Strongest man. People would pick on him all the time. The funny thing is that there was another guy who was 5’6", and probably did’nt even weigh 140lbs. every idiot on earth would go after him. Problem was he was an Army boxing champion who used to moonlight with us. They never knew what hit them.
2: I don’t want to upset people here, but based on my experience, the best street fighters were guys who fought on the streets. They did’nt do Karate or Kickbox or any of that stuff. Most of them had boxed however, at some point in their lives.
And just to go off topic a bit. A word of advice from my experience to all you MMA types. For christs sake, if you ever get in a street fight, do not take the guy to the ground, and go there with him. All his mates will kick the crap out of you.
3: I agree with whoever said earlier that you just have to overwhelm your opponent. My philosophy was always to be nice and talk my way out wherever possible. If that fails however, the mantra became: Hit him, Hit him, hit him till he stops moving, and then hit him again just to be sure. If in doubt at any time. Hit Him. I’m still here to tell the tale, some of my friends are’nt.
4: Other than boxers, who can fight, and are seriously good at it. The best advice I ever had was from our head doorman who was an ex Parachute regiment unarmed combat instructor. His favourite words of wisdom were: ‘I’ve been fighting for 26 years son. The first 15 (The martial arts) were a waste of time. If in doubt, think Nose, Eyes, Throat and Groin. Use what ever you’ve got, including your teeth. Put the bastard down, and get the f**k out of there.’
Not really an anti violence message I know, but this all kept me healthy and unhurt for the 3 years I did that type of work.[/quote]
Good post. In my experience at krav, when we have students coming in from traditional Asian martial arts, as I did, they struggle (as I do). But the boxers who come in always have their shit together, they strike hard and fast & have good footwork.
Ha, side note, last week we had a female professional boxer come take a class, a really tall & muscular woman, but beautiful. When it came time to pick different partners for fatigue drills the big hard guys were all saying ‘pick me pick me!’. So she did & the more she beat the shit out of them, the more they fell in love with her.
