How Much Fiber Per Day?

Hey guys I eat a good amount of oates a day…around 3-4cups and it contains a pretty hefty amount of fiber thats been a little too much on my digestive system. I did the math and it has 5g per 1/4 x 4 cups = 80g a day. This seems like way too much to me and my intestines agree. Just alot of gas…no diarrhea besides once today and I feel fanatastic but im gassy…no bloat or water retention…just gassy. Is there anything wrong with having this much? My guess is my body is just havin’ issues since i just started increasing oates with all my meals so my body isnt used to it.

4 cups dry or cooked? Looking at my oats it has 4 grams of fiber per 1/2 cup dry. x8 for 4 dry cups(a lot of freaking oats) and you are looking at 32 grams of fiber.

This is a pretty good amount however and your body may need time to adjust to it, or you can vary your carb sources.

mine are bobs remill steel cut oates and have 5g per 1/4 cup uncooked. I have about 4 cups .daily (its my only carb source) and brings me to 80 which is ridiculous so im cutting back.

does fiber last for a certain time in the body or is it used and then gone?

example: eat 10g fiber and it lasts 1hr per gram (completely made up), or eat 10g of fiber and all is used up on the next bowel movement, whether it is now or in 12hrs.

not exactly sure…it would be gone by the next bowel movement though. So whatever timeframe you shit in that’s when it would get used up. I just ate more oates, this time with PB for some extra fat and it seems to be better on my stomach and digestive tract…i think its inhibition on certain fats being absorbed makes it leave so quickly if you eat fiber with ZERO fat. So add fat and its likely to avoid bloating and gas. But we shall see in a few hours before i sleep…

On a serious note, waylanderxx, is eating 80 grams of fiber daily okay? The only carb source besides greens I can seem to eat is oates but they make me fart like an mother f*cker. Not to mention I love how it only goes toward muscle growth not fat

Its a very complex carb, and compared to other carb sources that I used to eat, it NEVER bloates or makes me retain water or spikes insulin to where fat gain happens.

But why do oats make you gain muscle and not fat? It does spike insulin, and bloat/water retention is not fat gain.

That IS the question, isn’t it? He may as well claim eating 5000 calories a day of only protein won’t make you fat even if maintenance for calories is somewhere in the 3000 range.

To the OP, it’s true that oats don’t spike insulin as much as, say, a snickers bar. It’s also true that they are low in fat and thus insulin spike + fat consumption doesn’t necessarily happen either. But… it’s hard to think that if you’re eating over maintenance in calories, despite lots of muscle gains (hopefully!) that no fat is being put on your body from the oats.

Though you may be getting a lot of fiber from Oats it is mostly soluble fiber. This is the type of fiber that is bulk forming eating to much can cause gas, bloating, and constipation. If you want to continue eating this much oatmeal you will have to up your fat intake and/or up your insoluble fiber intake i.e. green veggies, bran, and fruit.

No, I apologize if I made that sound confusing. I just meant ALOT less fat will be gained with oates as the only carb source compared to say potatoes or other carb sources based on my body type and how I react to certain carbs. Gaining body fat is unavoidable during bulking though it can be slowed.

Actually my oates have more insoluble fiber. So the opposite happens, ive been noticing a little diarrhea, more of just loose stools and not liquid. No problem going to the bathroom and definitely not constipation. Now I do have some gas but not bloating which is why I like them so much. I do notice is lessens the sides when I put a scoop of PB in it to add fat. [/quote]

That is weird. I really think that can’t be right I have eaten steel cut oats, rolled oats, oat groats from different brands and have never seen one have more insoluble fiber than soluble fiber. Online they have the breakdown at 2g each.

yes its weird as hell, and it would make sense as to why my bowels are more runny then normal if its more insoluable fiber. I think I need to change oat brands?

I dunno, I don’t even eat greens right now. I shit all the time and hardly have to wipe, so I can’t complain.
