I’ve played basketball with this guy a handful of times. He’s maybe 5’6" and 130lbs. Maybe. Having witnessed his “athletic ability” up close, not to mention acknowledging his slight frame, there is no way on God’s green earth he can bench 300lbs.

For a 1RM…not so much.
The average couch potato I see benching can put up 245-250 or so for one.
You dont think someone who eats right and actually lifts more than once a month, could easily do 50 pounds better than that ???
Im curious as to what you guys think a grown man’s average bench is ???[/quote]
You and I go to very different gyms then, 'cause the “average couch potato” in my gym is topping out at 185 or so for a few reps. Facts are is there aren’t alot of people putting up over 3 plates in most gyms.

Probably “benching” on a machine.
Those seats with the handles and such, the stack goes to like 400+ pounds, but most everyone over 170 pounds can rep the stack for 10 pretty easily.

This.
In fact, according to ExRx.net, the average untrained full grown man can max bench a whopping 140lbs.
I’ve read articles on here that the average T-Nation reader has an average bench press of around 275lbs although there are many people on here that bench more than that, that was the average which I believe, so to say that the average couch potato can put up 250lbs seems stupid to me.

outside of powerlifting, 315 IS a big bench.
no fucking way is T. Woods benching 315. i honestly doubt he could handle 225 for reps.

I call BS on that one too. I’m willing to bet the average male T-Nation reader ain’t even in the 225 club yet. Sad, but true.
Every article or interview I’ve read and heard he said he has benched 315.
From my deduction he has said this generally around a time he just finished training off season with a trainer. Probably a trainer thats worth a little more money then your general planet fitness trainers. Combine that with good nutrition, it is very reasonable. He’s also a PRO athlete, athletes go up and down in weight even many normal real world people. He may be 185 today but at the time he was likely heavier.
It was also a max which anyone who has done a routine to get to a specific goal then let go of will know. He probably did it then hasn’t lifted too much since and can’t lift it anymore.
I have seen him look pretty fit, and other times just regular one picture isn’t going to show how a person looks in different years.
As far as training I guess that’s what seperates his drive from you guys can you play golf without it…YES… but he doesn’t just play golf he dominates, so if benching a little more helps he’s going to do it.

Jesus.
Apprently they DO grow them bigger in Texas.
Perhaps the average couch potato down here used to play football in highschool or something.
The only people I with less than 200 on the bar are the skinny 14 year olds.
Just out of curiosity…how much would yall estimate the average guy to weigh ?
Down here Id say 220-240 or something, certainly not lean, but somewhere in that range.

It was on CBS’s 60 Minutes. They said he weighs 150 and benches 300.
He doesn’t look like he lifts at all. But when I weighed 125 in high school, I could bench a legit 250, so who knows.

I doubt Tiger does much heavy benching at all. I am sure his workouts are very functional and sport specific. Big, strong pecs have no bearing on a golf swing. It’s about the core, the legs, the hips, the arms, the shoulders, and above all, flexibility.
That said, I would be VERY surprised if the could bench 225 1 time.
