Ive heard of it but never seen a 600 pound bench press. I’ve only seen two men bench press 500 pounds and a handful bench 400 pounds or 450 pounds. One of the two that benched 500 was a short, stocky hispanic guy that was like 5’7 or 5’8. That was back in about 2004. The other guy was a black guy about 6’3 or 6’4. He weighed about 265 pounds, he wasnt super-ripped or anything, but he was solid and surely not flabby at all.
I was a side spotter when Stan Efferding benched 606. That was pretty cool.
Just go to a decent meet and you will see 600+ benches. Or are you talking raw?

Raw as uncooked meat!
High school. Guy who was one year ahead of me at St. Mary’s Prep in Orchard Lake MI. Kevin “KC” Clouse. I believe he was 5’7" and weighed 175. He bent the bars in the gym and I believe he did 600 pounds+ because I remember that he benched 3.5 times his bodyweight. This was 1983, maybe earlier, and I remember that there were 6 big plates on each side along with 4 of the biggest dudes in the school spotting him. (OLSM was and still is a real “jock” school, producing many All-Americans for a school that had only 250 guys.) This was his bench, not his squat.
There was an entire page about KC in the Detroit Free Press (or the News) about how he was one of the strongest guys in the world at that time pound-for-pound.
I really wish I had saved that newspaper because I’m sure a lot of people won’t believe this.

That is hard to believe. A 175 lb high school kid benching 600 pounds??? Even if he was 30 or 40 that’d be hard to believe. If you said he did 400, i maybe could believe that. Not saying you lying, but thats some shit!
I’ve seen it.
I know it’s hard to believe. I’m gonna e-mail his brother and see if he has the article. I’m not making this up!
Steve Wong an Ted Acacidi
There was a kid at my highschool who at 19 did 585. We’re the same age but he was a grade behind me. I actually didn’t graduate [ged] but remember hearing about him doing some crazy shit. I wasn’t into lifting then so it probably didn’t strike me as it should’ve. Ran into him a couple of years later when I started lifting at a Bally’s.
He said he had taken some time off 'cause of work and family, but he was repping 315 like it was 135. That was probably 2002 or '03. Have no clue what he’s doing now.
Nick Winters benching 700x2 at the Arnold last year. Spotter’s hands on the bar, elbow wraps, blah blah but no shirt and it remains one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen.
fellas…google youtube raw bench press…you’ll find many like this one
WTF is this though?
If those are 45#'ers I got 585lbs…could be wrong
those cant be 45#plates

I don’t believe it. at that time, Mike Bridges, maybe the greatest powerlifter ever, ( he was Ed Coan before Ed Coan was Ed Coan), had the world record at 181 with 529 pounds.this was done under strict IPF judging standards at an international level meet.
Bridges totaled over 2100 pounds at 181, with very primitive single ply gear. He benched in a tight t shirt. that kid used bumper plates or something and people made up bullshit.
At this time I think only Joe Bradley had benched over 3X bodyweight. And that was raw, 396,397 at 132.

I wouldn’t even believe 405 at 175 in high school.

Hey, it’s completely plausible a 175lbs high school kid destroyed every record up through the 220’s and beat, by far, every raw bench on Wilk’s forumla (heck, any formula). Not to mention there is a 3.5x bench – done by the very powerful midget, Andrzej Stanaszek, at 114lbs. So it’s obviously very doable.
I don’t see what’s so unbelievable. Haters gonna hate.

WTF…why does it have to be hate? Someone posts something about a KID benching more than the best powerlifter in the WORLD and it should not be greeted with some skepticism? C’mon.
Anyway, was at a meet at Iron Island gym in the 90’s when Chris Confessore hit 700+ and I think it was a WR at the time at 242.
^^^^I think you missed the sarcasm. Stop hating.
Would love to see that tape of a 17yr old 175lb kid in the 80’s benching 600 raw. But I can see how in a gym with bumper plates numbers can be inflated especially if witnessed by novice lifters who may not know the difference!
Hell I still have people claiming to have seen my spectacular 520 bench. And I’m thinking “why am I still going by 460”?
I could see a 175 pound MAN benching 400 (600 is a hella jump though), but not a hs kid. Reason being is because a hs boy muscles arent fully developed as of yet. Most males dont approach peak levels of strength until their mid 20’s

What does a person’s color and/or heritage have to do with benching ability, HH?
