How Many Sets for Traps?

PX, if you don’t mind sharing how much are you lifting for your traps work?
I used to go up to 6 plates a side on the hs shrug machine but the one I use now only goes up to 5…so I do my reps slower now and hold the peak contraction.

Is that the only thing you do for traps and if so how do you try to insure growth in your traps if you can’t go up in weight? I mean you can only go so slow/hold the peak for so long. Do you basically have it in there so they keep getting hit with enough volume while counting on increases in rows, shoulder work, etc… to make them grow?
Yes, it is all I do for traps. Nothing else.

As far as your other question, go lift 5 plates on that machine. Then take that weight off and use only one plate a side trying to use great form with a brief hold at the peak of the movement.

The moment you can lift that 5 plates like you just did that one plate, your traps will be fucking huge…even if you did use the same weight on the last movement for years.

There are more ways to stimulate muscle growth than simply worrying about the exact weight. It is also what you do with that weight.

The guy who can curl a 75lbs dumbbell with loose form may be big…but the guy who can do it with form the same as someone curling a 20 will be a freak.

of course but just because someone who shrugs 5 plates with good form will almost always have big traps doesn’t mean he wouldn’t want to try to stimulate more growth. My question is how you make sure your traps are growing. If you have done 5 plates in the exact same way for a year (for example) I can’t see it still providing any more growth unless something else was added into the mix (whether that be an exercise, anabolics, etc…). Having said that you mentioned a couple posts after this that you don’t think yours need to be much bigger anyway.

Dude, I already wrote that I am not after huge trap growth. My pic is right there with my traps NOT flexed. Flexed they almost overpower my shoulders. They DEFINITELY would if I really made them much bigger.

I am after more quality than quantity at this point in that one muscle group.

I mean, really…it looks like I need more size?

One question,is behind the neck press dangerous even if done only to ear level and up? Or is it okay?

BTN’s are dangerous no matter what. Most really big guys I used to know had shoulder injuries by the time they got to that size, mostly because of taking that movement as low as possible or overall lacking an understanding of at risk their shoulders and knees are training heavy regardless.

Word seems to have gotten out because I rarely see someone do that anymore.

I used to do them in a smith machine (once again because I am aware of how fragile your shoulder joint is to begin with) and only took them to ear level.

I use more machines now.

I would never use heavy weight, and low reps on these…but I love them as a finisher…a few sets after my delt workout of BTN press 15-20 reps…light light weight…pump like nothing else.

1 week heavy w/ 6 sets of 4 reps for upper traps 6x4 for low traps = 12 sets
1 week high volume = 10x10 upper and lower so 5x10 up 5x10 low = 10 sets

I wonder if traps respond better to heavy weight for high reps, 10-15? since the ROM is short therefore the time under tension is short maybe one should work with a little higher rep range to get more TUT. what do you think?

Guys ,which exercise hits the mid delt best, muscle clean and press or bradford presses?
Behind the back cable lateral raise.
I vote that. Or, if using dumbels, be explosive out of the start position, since there is very little resistance there, and for me that makes all the difference.

work out traps and deadlifts on the same day

i like the basic deadlift and shrugs.
