Apparently, not being able to do these with ease is supposed to be an excellent predictor of an early death.
Apparently, I will be dying early. Even though I am a lot stronger than an average guy, a fair bit faster, leaner and decently flexible. But the only way I could do one of these is if I pistol squat myself up off the ground - not very difficult, but still not what I would consider to be “easy”, as some people have demonstrated in videos. Even old, frail-looking women. (Getting up comfortably, using both their legs.) I cannot do that, despite violently trying to shift my weight forward.
I’m wondering if it’s a disability that I have or is it similarly difficult for some other folks here?
These little factoids are just garbage. Physical proportions would weigh heavily on some folks ability to do this, fit, strong or otherwise. Good luck if you have long legs.
An amusing bit of irony: I remember vividly when I was maybe 9 or 10 (before there was internet to tell us all the scary things) not being able to stand from the floor without using my hands. At the time, I was worried that did not bode well for my escape options if I was ever captured by a supervillain. I started running and doing pull-ups on the tree in our backyard. So, for me, I guess this test was something of a wake up call kind of indicator.
Not being able to get back up is correlated with frailty, as is grip strength, balance, and etc, just as BMI is associated with negative health outcomes because high BMI generally denotes obesity. It doesn’t factor in muscle mass.
Personally, it’s important to me, just as being able to put my palms on the floor when standing is.
Unless I can’t do a thing, in which case I declare it stupid and don’t worry about it.
When I first ventured into gymnastics (in my teens) without any formal training, just a book, I learned how to do a kip up from the ground using my hands. After that I learned how to do the kip up without my hands, just using my neck to help pop up from the ground.
Today, it is all I can do to get up from the ground using anything within reach. I am likely knocking on death’s door, by the OP standard.
