How Many Grams of Carbs Do You Bulk On?

As the title suggests, let’s hear it guys.

I actually tend to eat a lot more fats in the offseason, When I would be in contest prep mode, I would actually have to plan very meticulously how I was going to get more carbs each day, while still coming in under my #s. That’s why I’m such a big fan of poptarts and finibars. You try getting 400g from nothing but oatmeal, ezekial bread, and brown rice (“clean foods?” my ass -lol). Any competitor knows the value of a tasty, non-bloating, high carb yet low-manageable fat source

I eat a lot of fat too, but I’ve just finished a cut and am going to try to be a bit more scientific than I usually am when I’m bulking. Usually I just make sure I hit my protein target and let the carbs and fats take care of themselves.

For the first time ever I’m actually going to work out macro targets and stick to them.

personally i always bulk on higher carbs, I get my fat minimums(Usually around 0.4 grams a lb of body weight) HIt my protein minimums(pretty close to a gram a lb of body weight), and feel the rest with carbs

If I limited my fats intake to .4 grams/lb I wouldn’t even be able to maintain the LBM I have let alone add to it. Closer to .75 for me…everybody is different.

Anytime I’m trying to gain, usually seems to be that carbs are in the 450g/250g training/off days realm before I actually feel best, perform well and consistently can add .5-1 lb a week

Usually try to keep fats in the ~80-100g range

Fats .35xbw pro 1.5xbw (love how delicious it is not for performance per se) then much much much carbs 300-800 depending on bw mirror gym and life performance

Fats I keep low since I don’t really like fatty sources of anything. Other than a cinnamon roll. But really love lean meat, egg white, fat free dairy or low fat cheese. Cereal low fat ice cream and tons of rice and oatmeal with some bread make up carbs. And I still struggle not to eat myself into a 500lber

140-160g of fat?!! Wow

interesting stuff guys. I reckon I’ll start at 300g and work my way up over the coming weeks depending on how I get on with that.

That is correct. Carbohydrates usually are at about 150 unless it’s a re-feed day. Protein at 200-230 grams. I currently train 5 days/week; 20 minutes of cardio to begin each session, and the rest intervals are 60-90 seconds.

Keep in mind I’m 52; I consumed significantly more carbs when I was younger. The fat intake was still about the same though.

Very interesting. Glad you found what works for you. I hope my body never decides that’s the way I need to go. I would really not enjoy eating like that

the numbers are slightly higher here than I expected. I’m glad I asked this

I would like to say that, when in a caloric surplus, I think some kind of carb timing is helpful in staying leaner for longer while gaining.

Whether that’s something like IF, CBL, front loading carbs, eating them only intra wo, or even just eating a carb free Breakfast, I think managing insulin in some shape or form can go a long way.

Got to agree with this. I think people like to say its majoring in the minors but I don’t think its that minor when it comes to health and even looks. I think keeping insulin down for good portions of the day is very important. And allows for larger carb intake while maintaining fat. The best way to get your body to tap its fat is to have insulin down and activity up at some point and then keep insulin down after. That’s optimal. Fasting while doing that is IMO best. Dat has some great studies and anecdotes about this. Obv it can be tweaked to fit personal preference

I’m so jealous… I’m struggling NOT to gain w/ 47g/85 g (off/on).

The highest I’ve ever got was 1000 grams, but usually I end up around 700 when trying to gain weight
