I just got a medical done at work, i figured i wouldnt do too crash hot on some things and am working to fix those… one of the things that really did surprise me was the fact my hearing is not too flash… he said to me that i am on the threshold were i can cause some serious damage to my hearing. one of the reasons he said this could happen is long exposure to noise, i work in an office so that is not really an issue but what has probably caused this is (1) my car stereo, i have had some serious sounds put in and man i pump them… (2) Ipod usage when i train, i use it when i do cardio and weights and always have it loud in fact on max… he told me that i should be able to hear a conversation whilst i have music on, the way i use it now no way Jose… just thought i would put it out there so people were aware of this and did somethine about it before it got to a point where it can be a problem… btw im only 27…
As loud as it can go, my friend… 11!!!
WHAT??
I’d guess that your ipod is probably your main culprit since I’ve heard that those small headphones that plug into your ears are worse than those that cover your ears (I think it was because they don’t allow as much air to flow through so the sound puts more pressure on the eardrum or something like that), so definitely lower the volume in your ipod and prefearably stop using those earplug-headphones if you do so. Also stop trying to be cool by pumping your car stereo to very high levels. Also if you go to concerts or clubs were the music is very high put earplugs or cotton in your ears to protect them, I carry little cotton pieces in my wallet for those occasions to dampen the sound a little while still hearing the music very clear.

no doubt! that is correct, from now on i will not be a douche and listen to my stereo in the car louder than i can have a conversation… and what is recommended is having the Ipod set to 60% for 60minutes a day… and im going to buy some new headphones… man a shock to the system!
I think my ears were toast by time I was 17. I was gigging in bars at 15 standing in front of a Carvin X100B 100w stack.
MP3 player ain’t got nothin’.

You bastardddddd!!! This is exactly the first thing I thought of responding when I saw the title and the little sentence you get when you put your cursor over the thread title. Are you me? Except larger and quicker to the draw?
This stuff get’s me worried whenever I think about it. I spend a good deal of my day listening to music.
Your volume is over 9000!

“But this one goes to eleven!”
I’m 47 and lost most of my hearing in the right ear. Some in the left. It sucks. Save your hearing now why you have some left. When it’s gone, it’s gone.

I think the stage is this way … Excuse me good sir, could you direct us to the stage?
The best was the little stonehenge … I love that movie
I feel like such an oddball for not liking to wear an mp3 player while lifting, and not really liking music in general when I lift.
At about 83dB your hearing is almost linear, you can listen to things at that level for about 8 hours without hearing damage. The louder the sound is, the more sensitive you are to highs and lows. If you go too loud, obviously you’re risking damage to your hearing.

Except I’m blasted by a Sovtek Mig 100B. 100 watts of Russian heavy thunder.

I remember a while ago this sort of conversation came up and Prof. X said he gets distracted if he listens to an mp3 or music (something along those lines) … so you’re in good company Doug
I did a hearing test a while back, i lost some in my right ear (apparently from the shockwave of firing firearms)
if you are listening to mp3 with headphones, your volume should be no higher than 40% of the maximum power. But that guideline is hard to maintain, I was listening to my mp3 and this girl came over with her boyfriend, her conversation COMPLETELY blocked out my music. I dont see why she had to talk that loud given she was only 1/2 a meter away from her bf. Makes me wonder how loud she would be in bed though…
really fucking loud.
on my ipod w/ noise cancelling skullycandy headphones, the volume is usually at 75%.

yeah i hear ya (no pun) that’s why i use to pump them loud so i could concentrate… good point of the chick though, they probably both have hearing loss from exposure to loud noises lol…
