I was fairly sure this was the kind of question that may not be answerable. I’m not so much interested in anyone telling me how long it would take him. I’m more interested in about how long it takes the “average” person who had 400ish as their goal. This way I can let him know how much time he realistically could have to look forward to, based on the community of folks I’ve asked.[/quote]
I’ll throw my story in there. My first bench max was about 215. I had 315 within a year. I believe I did a reverse grip bench with 355 and hit a cambered bar incline of 350 at about the 5 year mark. I never did flat benches with any real interest until recently, but once I focused on the lift I got 405 the first time I tried it.
I have seen high school aged kids benching some pretty impressive weights after 3 or 4 years of serious training. I would like to think that if your friend is dedicated, he can get to 400 or more within 5 years, especially if he is that heavy.
I’m not there yet, but I’ll throw my story in for those who are starting at nothing who think they’ll never be stronger than the average person.
After 6 weeks of starting to work out, I had a whopping bro assisted 95lb bench press. In a year, I got 185 half rep. By the end of the next year, I had 205 legit. At not quite 4 years, I now have a 300 touch and go bench press tested a couple or so weeks ago and that’s with a lot of shit from my shoulder starting my 2nd year. Judging from my assistance and ME lifts, I’m thinking I’ll have 315 in a month especially now that I know how to take care of my shoulder.
