haha. I went on a forum hiatus due to life but my new job gives me ample down time. Hows life?
I’ve got a 30 minute commute but part of that time is taking my son to school which is past where I work. Since moving to California I’ve had no more than a 20 minute commute door to door and love it. I hate sitting (I’ve got a stand up desk at work) so driving in a car just tears me up.
I would much rather have my down time at home walking my dog or running around with my son than sitting in traffic. We moved into the suburbs and my commute is longer now than it’s ever been and I hate every second of if because it’s not simply driving. It’s being stuck in traffic.
I like where Cortes went with the learning but it’s hard to concentrate on things when you’re trying not to hit the car in front of you. I think that would work best if you were either taking a train or commuting on a road that wasn’t heavily trafficked.

Hitting the car in front? I’d be more worried about getting hit or run off the road…fuckin’ San Diego Drivers…

LOL…well, I drive a 15 year old 4runner so if someone wants to hit me I’m actually OK with that. Typically traffic is so slow on the 8 between the 15 and the 805 that getting hit wouldn’t do much damage.

I’m not trying to be difficult at all, but have you ever actually tried this? I spend at least half my driving time listening to some sort of self-improvement or educational audio and I have never once felt I was any more at danger to or in danger from myself or the other drivers around me. And remember, I live in Asia. Think about that for a second.

I have tried books on tape, and I find it very hard to concentrate on them and do other things at the same time. When I read, I want to read.

I’ve tried listening to podcasts, news radio, etc and it never works well for me because I find it hard to concentrate on other things while driving.

Huh. Guess I just took this for granted. As long as it’s a detail intensive but fairly monotonous task, (cooking, folding clothes, cleaning the house, driving, etc.) I have no issue at all concentrating, and in fact often get my best ideas while driving, and often have to pull over to dictate the idea while it’s still fresh in my mind.

I have a fortyfive minute drive on mostly country tw lane highways. It is a really pretty drive through woods and farmland but can also be quite monotonus. It is also a gauntlet for deer so I have to be very alert when it is dark.
I like to read but it can put me to sleep. Since I have already fallen asleep at the wheel once this is not a good scenario. I do use language cd’s while driving but that is more interactive.
BTW I never see a chance to listen to music as a waste of time. Please don’t take this as a jab, but you do seem like a type A personality, maybe listening to some music on your drive would do you good.

Hah! I am not quite Type A, just passionate with a dash of nuttiness, but I actually take your comment as somewhat of a complement.
I do listen to music about half the time I drive. I have a massive collection of music, as a matter of fact (well more than I can fit in to my 64g iPhone. I balance the work with the fun, and you might be surprised at some of my choices. Example, lately, I’ve got the Black Metal bands Burzum, Bethlehem and Gorgoroth on loop when I’m not listening to the fabulous marketing audio program I mentioned earlier. I also love math rock, post-rock and rap.
Just keep that country crap as far away from me as you can get. You want to see Type A behavior, put on some country music in an environment I can’t escape from. You’ll see the Hulk on 40 hours overtime come out.

I love my 'Boys, Derek! Only reason I don’t get more involved in the NFL discussions around here is that it’s just too dang hard for me to catch the games over here. Most games are on at around 5am in Japan. Ugh. One of the big sacrifices I make in living here is missing those lazy Sunday afternoons and watching my Cowboys wipe the field with the Redskins on Thanksgiving Day. (^_^)b
You know what, I just read the definition of a Type A personality and I guess it actually describes me a lot better than I thought it did.

I basically just meant very driven and a bit high strung.
Type A
The theory describes a Type A individual as ambitious, rigidly organized, highly status conscious, can be sensitive, care for other people, are truthful, impatient, always try to help others, take on more than they can handle, want other people to get to the point, proactive, and obsessed with time management. People with Type A personalities are often high-achieving “workaholics” who multi-task, push themselves with deadlines, and hate both delays and ambivalence.
Yeesh, Testy, are you some kind of psychoanalyst or something, lol? I really cannot find anything there that does NOT describe me pretty well to a tee.

It’s not as if you keep your opinions secret so it wasn’t that hard. They do mention hostility and I don’t really see you as hostile, just passionate.

You’ve got me nailed.
I even almost mentioned in my last post that I don’t find myself to be at all hostile, but decided it’s the kind of thing that a hostile person would also say about his personality, so just kept it to myself.
