I did it in A&P class a few years ago. 3 minutes 26 seconds. I could have gone a little longer but people commenting started making me lose my focus and I eventually just said screw it there is no benefit to this.

Had an experience much like this, i got 3:11, it gets hard to focus when the people around you comments/claims you are cheating or whatever, so i just quit, maybe 15-30 seconds early. Still m personal record. Don’t swim though… I remember when 1 minute was hard as fuck, but that suddently changed for some reason…
a breath hold that isnt done underwater doesnt count… everyone knows that

Its only functional if you do it under water, non-functional out of water. I got your back Greg.
No FA it’s not Genetic… it’s more about How your body utilized Oxygen in the blood and how well your brain can run on a slower trickle of Oxygen.
These people claiming 3+ minutes, let’s see a vid of you holding your breath fully submerged in water for that long.
You’ve got to be kidding. You can go youtube free divers and girls who think they are mermaids and see people going 8-10 minutes. Most people can reach 3 minutes within a day if they want to.
When I used to dive and practiced holding my breath I could hold it for a long time, well over two minutes maybe over three. I don’t remember at this point. Swimming around in the ocean, dealing with kelp, a flashlight, a game bag, maybe a spear etc etc, I might have lasted 45 seconds.
The one thing I hated about free diving was my tendency to push my limits on every dive and having that desperate feeling every time while coming up and sometimes not knowing if I was going to make it. I usually dove by myself in the middle of the night. Safety first was not my mantra in those days.

Underwater is easier!
You can learn to slow your heart rate even without submersion. A roommate and I used to practice it. I got my heart rate down to 32 bpm and he beat me with something like 28.
I saw a documentary on free divers a while back. They can hold their breath for up to 11 minutes and that, according to the doc, defies medical science.
