How Does the World View You?

Maybe I’ve had a few bad experiences with “people” in my life, but “fuck the world” was immediately what popped into my head. I can’t control the world, I can’t fully control my surroundings and if you believe you can, you’re naive. I even believe that our control over our own selves is mostly an illusion. I believe that while we do make choices, we would repeat our decisions if the circumstances of the situation were identical. We’re just leaves in a windy day, our cards have been dealt to us and now we’re just along for the ride.

I suppose in the end…I don’t care at all how the world views me. I’ve been told numerous times that I always look and seem angry when I talk. I always just thought it was passion in my voice, not anger.

After being misinterpreted and misread for over 28 years, I really only care about my perception of myself and that those who I love, love me as well. Fuck everyone else.

If we are talking close family/friends they actually know you and for the most part you’ll figure it out yourself if your an asshole or not, or what kinda person you are in general. Seems like the people with families really only care about what they think of them and that’s bout it. I on the the other hand for the most part care what a lot of people think of me…if I’m dealing with a stranger, a person that I’ve only known for a couple weeks or a life long friend…I want them to know I’m honest, keep my word, can rely on me, and won’t back down from a situation be it good or bad.

The general public in my mind seems to be only concerned about what they are doing…it’s like when they are walking they are zombies. When I see people making turns in their car without looking I’m baffled. Literally if I don’t brake I can smash them lol it’s hilarious. Or people in the mall…for the most part if I don’t move…I’m bumping into someone…it’s like they are dead zombies walking only concerened with what they are doing.

Or like people not holding the door if your right behind them…maybe it’s just a lack of common courtesy, or people really just don’t give a shit about eachother to be aware of other people and their surroundings.

Well I can’t say I luv you, I’d have to see a picture first…but I am always glad to see you in these threads

Good manners but quiet, brooding, and bookish.
Distant and aloof too, but it’s just because I don’t say much.

Mostly I don’t care about that though. People’s opinions of me don’t bother me.

That drives folks nuts too. People that trash talk, back bite, try to tear you down or lay down unfair judgmental opinions about you think that your supposed to get mad or react to it, or something so it really fucks with them when I don’t.

It’s more damaging to YOU when you become emotionally involved in other people’s bullshit than it is so them, so why bother?

I find that my wife and I, out in public, always have a nice time and help create one around us. We strive to be pleasant not only to colleagues but also to everyone we deal with in public–baristas, wait staff, vendors, public servants–and rarely have an experience with someone that leaves us the impression that we made that person’s life difficult.

Being nice to people may be part upbringing, but I believe for myself that it is a conscious choice I’ve made over the years, because it makes dealing with other people easier. Does this make things better for ME? Sure. But that doesn’t detract from the value of the effort it takes to make things nicer for others.

According to the article I read lastnight on what makes people happy, you are on the right track. It says to help be happier start talking to folks in line-ups, elevators etc. I swear your second paragraph was word for word what the author wrote lol. Now it didn’t say to start acting like Ned Flanders but just be friendly to strangers, it can have a ripple effect.

The reason I bring this up here is because after reading this thread they seem connected in some of ways. If you’re a happy person chances are you DO care what others think about you so you try to be nice to folks, I could be wrong of course, just a feeling. Like most things in life, balance is the key, be courteous but not let people treat you like a doormat either.

It’s interesting how most people seem to perceive themselves as a great deal better or nicer than they actually are. Why does everyone think so highly of themselves? I think this is a huge problem in our society because everyone is always pointing the finger at someone else. It’s always someone else’s fault and the other person is always wrong.

Over the past few years i feel like I’m growing up a lot and starting to really understand things like this. I am getting much better at constantly analyzing myself and whatever situation arises as a whole instead of immediately pointing the finger at someone else. You have to figure that in all of the confrontations/arguments/disagreements in your life, you’re going to be wrong 50% the time.

I’d like to think analyzing yourself and how you are perceived by the world is just something that comes with maturity, unfortunately i’m not sure it has much of anything to do with it. I see waaaaay too many adults acting like children these days, arguing over stupid shit that in the end just isn’t important in life. But the world has wronged them and that must be fixed.

All of this probably made no sense… I sear it makes more sense in my head. My mind runs rampant and i can’t control it. Thank god i’m not an English major
I find your post interesting in that my first reaction after reading the first 2 sentences was, “why is this guy pointing fingers at others regarding how highly they think of themselves or how nice they are?”, then I go on to read and most of your post is speaking out against people who point out faults in others.

I’m not meaning this to throw insults your way, I just thought it was funny and I should point it out.
That, in my opinion, just proved what he was saying. I totally agree with TD54. I wish getting older = maturity, but alas, we all know that isn’t the case.
