I am interested largely because in many of these discussions I feel only qualified to ask questions and not give answers. Much of the subject matter becomes involved to a point where I at least FEEL that I am surpassed in how informed I am compared to others.
I am certainly no slouch and have a minor in Sports Medicine (whatever that confers for me), so it makes me curious–are you all just extremely interested laypeople or do some of you have credentials under your belts as well?
Do any of the regulars have professional or academic credentials and
if not, where did you get most of your information?
If you have a minor in sports medicine I think you should be able to guage who on here has academic credentials and who doesn’t.
From the answers I see on here it seems the majority of people who comment are not certified, and the information is a combination of experience, reading, and searching the web. These are excellent sources to assist somebody who has formally studied sports medicine.
You shouldn’t feel less qualified to respond in a forum on the internet. Even if your wrong the knowledge gained from debating various points can go a long way. This used to be called a bodybuilding think tank, and it doesn’t work if everybody is just listening to one person because he seems like he knows everything.
To directly answer you question I have no formal training in sports medicine and I got most of my information from all the sources I listed above.
It seems that alot of the folks here are bachelor, post grad, and beyond in their fields, with a few in sports performance.
Me, I got nothing but a few semesters of college, and reading a couple of books. When I go over my one buds house, I’ll flip through his trade journals and stuff. I’ve tried a few things here and there, evaluated them for my needs and either kept or disregarded them as training theories, but nothing scientific.
I look at most stuff now for its arrangement of the basic training factors- reps, sets, tempo, frequency, and the like, to see what type of training effect it is designed to achieve, and leave the hype.
I’ll leave the debates of neurology and physiology to the neurologists and physiologists.
This site has a number of nurses, doctors, lawyers, engineers, physicists, and school teachers. One of the reasons I like this site is that it does seem to attract some people like that. However, I could personally care less what someone’s credentials are unless they have achieved something significant in the way of the physical goal I am after…or they have trained others who have.
Like Airtruth wrote, if you do have a minor in sports medicine, you should be able to tell who has some sort of education or not.
Certified as NSCA-CPT but I would say I have learned more from this site about practical training than that ever gave me. This site, dragondoor.com, davedraper.com, deepsquatter, naturalstrength.com all top info sources.
