Hot Sauce use when dieting - Too much acid?

I follow Berardi’s meal plans as closely as possible eating very clean and about 8-9 meals a day P+ C & P+F but I tend too use a fair amount of hot sauce on my foods.

for example, I use hot sauce on my salads, my veggies, my wild rice (first meal after workout) etc. by lean ground beef, steak, tuna, chicken etc.

Is this much acid in my diet throughout the day going to have an affect on my ability to continue to lean out?

My current stats are 5 foot 10 about 220 lbs and around 15% BF.

I am down from around 300 lbs this time last year and obviously my fat loss has slowed for various reasons but I wanted to see if my acid intake was a concern. Any advice/feedback is welcomed. Thanks.

P.S. i am using Hot-Rox just finished 4 weeks of EDT (fat loss version) and now doing 4 weeks of OVT to be followed by 4 weeks of EDT (arm specialization version)

Raider,

I buy hot sauce by the gallon and use it as you do. I was able to go from 300 to 170 at my lightest no prob.

I do however and have been for a while (over a year, after the weight loss)supplemanting with baking soda. About a tsp a day. I simply put 1/2 tsp. in the water for my coffee in the morning, and if i feel like it I will have some later in the day.

This is a cheap way to control your acid base if it worries you.

Hope this helps,

Phill

I’m a hot sauce affecionado. Well, maybe not, but I tend to drown my food in it. I use Texas Pete’s and find it to be a nice flavoring agent and it doesn’t have calories. I would imagine that in the amounts that I use it, it has calories, but nothing that is going to harm anything (2-3 maybe). I use it EVERYWHERE. That and cayenne pepper.

Yesssss! a hot sauce thread!

I too use tons of hot sauce in my diet as well as cayenne, jalapenos, pepperonccinis(sp), tobasco you name it, I like it hot!

If your worried about your acid levels just make sure your getting in enough alkaline foods (check out the PRAL chart) to balance out.

Yea, I love hot-sauce too. It’s great and not too high in calories. However, it does contain a lot of Sodium. So, you might want to watch out for that.

This is a staple in my household. I can’t really answer the acidic question. But I love it spicy. One of my favorite meals is a can of tuna, 1 cup of ff cottage cheese, .25 cup of shredded cheese, and .5 cup of salsa. People at work think this is gross. But it taste good to me.

There are very few meals which I don’t spice with some kind of hot sauce/pepper. A good salt free alternative to sauces is McCormicks powdered Red Pepper (Cayenne). Another is “Red Pickled Tabasco Peppers” by The Tropical Pepper Company; which contains salt, but as you use it you can keep adding vinegar for quite a while without sacrificing flavor, and the salt content dilutes over time.

I love hot sauce!!

Guys! hot sauce rocks! don’t worry about it. if your stomach can handle the heat and it doesn’t come out spicy on the other end, you’re good.

in fact, cayenne can increase the metabolism and even help you burn calories. so, eat as much as you want. the only bad part is, it’s likely made with distilled white vinegar, which isn’t the best stuff in the world (apple cider would be better) but if you take this with food (noone drinks it straight do you?!?!) it’s probably actually good for your digestion. not to mention, hot things increase the bodies mucus layer in the digestive tract, which is really good for you!
by the way, i love hot things too. could you tell?!?

Stomach acid is hydorchloric acid, which is a strong acid. Unless you are drinking cups of hot sauce made with vinager (which is just a low concentration of acetic acid) you will be fine. Even then it will just bother your stomach. The whole acid/alkali body conditions thing has been proven to be BS over and over again. What you eat does not change the pH of your body…it is buffered…were good like that.

Thanks for the feedback as apparently I am not the only one who goes threw two large bottles a week.

Recipe tip that I enjoy.

5 cups of head lettuce
1 cup dry curd fat free cottage cheese
heaping amounts of hot suace as dressing

maybe a little bit of bacon bits and a drop of ranch dressing.

It fills you up considering it comes in at less than 250 calories and for a guy cutting that is good news.

I am also a big fan of using lots of crushed chili peppers as I love spicy food and hate having something with zero flavour in it.

Man, Hot sauce rules. I keep 20 different types in my kitchen at any given time. But, if you’re concerned about the acid, try Melinda’s 100% ground habanero powder. This stuff rocks but use it sparingly. It will tear you a new one.

sounds good! i’ve shared home-made hot sauce recipes with other folks on this board. homemade is fun, but a lot of work. store bought is always easier.
for some serious pain, try Scorned Woman hot sauce.

i am also growing a ton of my own pepper plants this year, i love to make stuff with fresh HOT peppers. Try carribean red peppers, OMG, they’re WAY hot on the hot scale. they have a mild flavor, mostly pain. but the plant itself grows to be about 5 feet tall and puts out a lot of peppers. it lasted til about December last year in my garden.

I love salsa as well as hot sauce.
Just yesterday I mixed some hot taco powder in with my ground beef and it was delicious.

Hot Sauce kicks ass!! I go through a bottle of Tapatio a week. I put that shit in my oatmeal. I recently discovered Rooster Sauce from my Girlfriend, its an Asian thing, just smother your rice with it. I usually eat the peppers raw from the bush. Its never too hot. I must be immune cause I never get hot-mudd-butt.

Hot sauce rocks -also try a few tablespoons of cinnamon everyday-Julianne
