Powerrack
Half Rack
Smith Rack - yes
1/2 size Platform - homemade
Glute/Ham
Total Gym - yes (there are some really good Back movements with this)
a couple of Pulleys
A bunch of Medicine Balls
Dumbbells 5-60 plus 80’s. Very hard to find heavy DB’s on Craig’s.
A bunch of weight, 3 Oly Bars.
All sorts of straps, bands, handles, a Bosu Ball
That’s about it.
Like Push, I need Bumper Plates. Also Dumbbells, 70’s, 90’s, 100’s. Then I’ll pretty much be done.
Here’s something I discovered about getting weight cheap. People sell their crappy benches with bar and weight on Craig’s List for pretty cheap. Twice I’ve bought such set ups then sold the crappy benches keeping the bars and weight. After reselling the benches my cost went down to less than 25 cents a pound not counting the bars.
I did feel bad for the guys who bought the benches from me. Both were nice guys and they both said “now I just need to find a bar and some weight”.
Enough with the lists, start posting photos! We are all curious what kind of home gyms you can create with a little effort. Give us something to LOOK at.
Bodysolid power rack
powerblock 125lb set
2" Axle
12" Log
couple olympic bars
1000+ lbs of weights
600lbish tire
1100+lb tire (be awhile before I am using this)
farmers bars
4 kegs filled with various weights
hi/low cable machine
seated calf raise (for natural glute ham raises mainly)
2 stone molds (need to make the stones)
some other various grip stuff and stuff I have made
*things I need/want to add in the near future
some bumper plates
yoke
stone platform
sandbags
eventually a better power rack
I bought everything but the log farmers and powerblocks used or made them myself. I’ll attach a crappy pic
Some of those pics are inspiring. I will definitely create my own gym along these lines when I finally settle down somewhere outside a city. Sadly , that probably wont be for another 10 years.

I was interested in what other home gym owners have in their basements/garages.
I’m just wondering what people have as essential pieces of equipment in their own gyms.
Right now I have a setup of a half power rack, low/high pulley, powerblocks up to 130, about 500lbs of weights, and a crappy GHR/reverse hyper from newyorkbarbells.com. I’m thinking about upgrading to a better GHR/Rev Hyp, but they’re so damn expensive.[/quote]
Hi Dag,
It sounds like you are looking/building for more of a power/Strength set up. My first advice to anybody looking to invest (and that is the key word-invest) in a home gym, would be to do your research first. You shouldn’t pick equipment because somebody else says its the best because it may not meet your needs and/or the strengths/limitations of the space you have available.
For me, I am actually going the exact opposite direction that it seems both you and most of the people on this forum. After a back injury which resulted from years of heavy lifting and combat sports, I am just too much of a pussy to keep getting hurt. Also, my gym is in my basement which is part of the main living area of my house so it couldn’t look “hard core” or “ghetto”.
I am going to post several photos of my gym to give you an idea of what I mean. This set up cost’s way less than $5,000 and it meets my needs perfectly.
What I have:
Power blocks up to 90lbs.
Light duty NY barbell power rack
Full assortment of jump stretch and JC bands
5X8 wrestling matt
Stability Ball (65 cm)
Straight Bar with 500lbs of free weights
Dip/Leg ext
Curl bar/mini olympic bar
Body solid functional trainer w/ cable attachments
foam rollers/med balls and a bunch of other training toys from perform better.
Like I said, this gym set up wouldn’t work for most of your hardcore max effort guys but that really isn’t what I am doing anymore anyway.
I put up a “home gym” at my work and thought I’d share some photos. This is my rack. The guy I bought it from said he fabricated it himself. I don’t know if you can tell by the picture, but it’d be an understatement to say it’s pretty nice.
Sorry about the rotation on the rack. It doesn’t seem to take when I try rotating it. I hope it’s not a problem with the rest of them. Here’s my Dumbbell rack. I’m light on DB’s. I quit collecting them a year and a half ago when I blew out my shoulder. I’ve got everything through 60’s plus a pair of 80’s
