Holy F-ing Whey Protein Prices....

Even with increased protein prices and produce food is pretty cheap. That is part of the reason this country is so fat. There are still ways to save as numerous threads have discussed such as discount clubs. I know some on this board are young and do not pay for all their expenses.

For those of you just wait until you are on your own, and you may find yourself having much more money, but not that much more disposable income if you have a family.

What is really expensive is anything that requires an individuals time from home repair to a lawyer. Without all the low labor prices from foreign labor we would not be such a nation of consumers. Do not get me wrong as much as I bitch that we are all spoiled I am a consumer too and I do not want to live like my grandparents did when they were young.

Bottom line is that no one likes to see prices increase, but they usually do and occasionally quite drastically. Even the dollar menu at McDonalds will have to go up some day. Feel free to bitch, as there is nothing wrong with venting a little in my opinion.

This is what I’m paying approximately for each and according to fitday the protein for them.

Protein Powder 4.65 lb 375 grams/lb
Chicken Breast 2.00 lb 85
Lean Ground beef 2.00 lb 97

PP- 80.6 grams per dollar
Chicken- 42.5
Beef-48.5

So for me protein powder is still an affordable food item as long as I can find prices that make it at least as good cost wise per dollar as chicken or beef. The cost would have to jump to close to 10 dollars a lb(for what I buy) for it to be out of my price range. If I did my math wrong please don’t correct me ha, I know it still works out that powders are worth it in my budget.

According to my friend who ownes a supp store, the price increase is due to two main reasons.

  1. The chinese have purchased HUGE quantities of milk protein for their children to have at school. Plus they are becoming more westerised, and are starting to add milk to tea, etc.

  2. New Zealand fell well short of their milk production quota.

Could be bollocks, but he insists it’s true.

The New Zealand (NZ) thing is true. I just bought some more Whey Isolate and Micellar Casein, the NZ Whey is sold out and has been for a while, only EURO in stock now.

The price is going up due to the cost of the feed of the cows…

Corn is the primary food source for live stock due to it’s ability to grow cows quicker (that and more gear than Ronnie Coleman)

Corn prices are stressed due to the fact that the U.S. gov forces the oil company’s to add more and more ethanal to the blended gasoline.

Look for a sharp increase in October… That is when it Is mandated that more ethanal be blended into the gasoline for the winter months…

The NZ should be because of the bad winter they had last year. Coldest winter in like 50 years I think, lost a lot of cows/sheep due to not having enough hay.

Luckily M-Drive and Grow! havent gone up… Makes it a little more affordable now comparitively. Hell, the 5 pound tub of Grow! is one of the cheapest on the market now.

Not sure if alot of you think outside of the box and grab a cheap filler protein besides drinking Metabolic Drive all the time, but wow whey has made another jump.

I used to get Opt. Nutrition’s 100% Gold Whey 5lbs at $26, it jumped to $32 last order, now its at $37!!! 10lb’s at $68…Geez! When will the madness end?

This is what you get for trying to be healthy?!! No wonder the average American is overweight.[/quote]

Biotest’s 5-pound tub of whey protein (Grow!) is still $29.99.

(And yes, it’s largely because of the rising cost of corn for biofuel and the impact it’s had on farms.)

True.

Ahwell, prices haven’t really jumped in Australia but that’s because they were always ridiculously high…
Optimum Nutrition Whey is like 100 AUD which is about 82 USD at the current exchange rate (for ~2.5kg); it’s 38 USD at BB.com. BCAAs are about double the cost, similar with creatine (after exchange rate taken into account).
Using supps in Aus, and I assume NZ, is remarkably pricey.

Nice discussion guys, I read all the replies.

It makes sense with the increase in Ethanol, messing with livestock. I’ve also heard about China buying milk like mad.

It sucks but oh well I’m still gonna buy it, just not as much at a time. Thats pretty cool the price of Metabolic Drive or Grow! Whey hasn’t changed.

Another thing whats up with the cholesterol levels in Grow!/Metabolic Drive Complete?

It’s now Nov. 2007 & record high gas prices are at our pumps here in Pa. So if the gov is forcing the oil company pricks to add more ethanol to the bend then why do we have record high prices? We’re paying higher & higher prices!

Bottom line over this last year prices increased crazy on food, whey, electric, water, beer, gas, & oil. I shop at Walmart & thanks to their useless re-model steaks among other things got raised from $15 to $23 & higher. Beer went up $10 on a half due to taxes (more frickin’ money the bastard gov is pocketing). Gas went from $2.65 to $3.09 for what every bullshit reason it is this week.

All because of the 1% that are the richest in this country controlling everything. Their trying to phase out the middle class & have poor & rich. What the gov needs to do is come & set caps on oil company prices because their the problem along with the admin in office running this country into the ground while they get richer & we can’t afford to stay warm or have any enjoyment anymore. Then we wonder why there’s crime…

One reason is corn ethanol is not economically viable compared to oil even at the current price per barrel.

The oil companies are being forced to add an expensive inferior product to their blends. We get stuck with the cost at the pump and again at the grocery store.

Unfortunately both Dems and Republicans are mostly onboard with it in the misguided thought that it saves the environment while it really just enriches companies the big corn processing companies.

It is really an unholy alliance.

Try $60 in Canada!!! for pretty much all 5 lb tubs of protein. Even canadian online are complete rip offs as they have the same prices as regular retail stores. And they all like to mention how much your saving. and in quebec it’s 15% sales tax. Criminals.

laying on your left side helps digestion because it prevents your stomach from smashing down on your intestines

yea i’m pissed about the optimum gold standard price going up too… used to be so cheap, 20$ for the 2 lb containers, now it’s like 30+
and their protein is way better tasting and more soluble than most others

Ethanol isn’t so much the problem right now as the drought in the Southeastern USA. Right now there are thousands of dairy cows drinking a lot less than they’re used to drinking, and eating a lot of half-dead grass. Milk production is in free-fall down there, and until regular rainfall starts again, milk prices will just keep rising in North America.

OMG YOUR SUCHA LIAR ALL THE OIL COMPANIES ARE VIAL LIARS WHO WASH THEMSELVES IN BUCKETS OF CRUDE AND DO COKE WITH OUR MONEY

As a side note, I am hearing lots of good stuff about TP’s Gemma protein. The amino acid profile looks good and it isn’t too terrible in taste or texture.

I just paid $105 for 10 lbs. in Canada. And our dollar is higher! This is cheap stuff too. I had a buddy pay $100 for 5 pounds haha.
