Holiday Fasting

It’s Yom Kippur coming up and though I am not particularly religious, I am feeling the guilt of not ‘fasting.’ Tonight at sundown I am supposed to stop eating until tomorrow evening. In fact, water is supposed to be limited as well. Any ideas what 24 hours of no food

if you are jewish and believe in it, then follow suit. lower volume of training this week

I had this same conversation with my girlfriend a few days ago, and with my mom tonight. My girlfriend is jewish and participates somewhat in Yom Kippur, and I told her I don’t think fasting is the greatest idea, but shes going with tradition on it. Anyways, I talked to my mom who is a holistic nutritionist and she is a particular fan of fasting occasionally and does have a big pile of studies to back it up which… of course she also thinks ‘why would someone be so obsessed with their muscles to just need to be anabolic constantly?’ so that didn’t say much either. ANYWAYS… I think it won’t make a very big difference in the long run - when I was a weird high schooler, I would go for a few days without eating just to prove i could… it really just didn’t make a lot of difference. The water thing sounds sketchy though - I would still drink at least whatever the recommended amount is nowadays… if not more.

I am a Jewish convert, although I decided several years ago to abstain from all religious ceremony. Anyways, today you are supposed to take only water (unless you must take medications for health reasons). Not even coffee. Also, no working out. The rule says you should be in the Temple all day, or at least three times. There is a lot of value in taking this one day per year to REALLY think about things. Also, you sure do notice all the ads for food which surround us–even when we don’t turn the TV on. I remember the Rabbi bending to the side, straining to see through the window if the sun had set (YET!), with all of us watching his face for an answer.

P.S. You’re not supposed to be on the compouter today, either!

Hehe, silly tradition. I dropped out of Hebrew school when I was about 9. Then I got tattoos. Of a friggin’ Monkey. I named him Ted. Then I got my nipples pierced. My family is very lax-jew. Still, we sit down to a good ‘ol drunken sader every year, which is fun. Hey, most people say that MRPs aren’t “Real food” so maybe there’s a loophole there. Me, I just look at Noah’s ark and think "Now THAT’S a fuckin’ buffet." Lata.

C’mon now, one day of fasting isn’t going to make one bit of difference. It’s all a matter of priorities, and you’ll soon find out where yours lie.
