What are good ways to increase hip flexibility in all planes of motion? My hip flexibility currently really sucks, I can’t squat deep because of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam Marshall

No hips = No power. You’ve got to do a combination of Dynamic stretching as well as static stretching. Pick up a few books at the library on yoga, sports stretching etc. You will find as you learn different stretches more will come to you instinctively. Davies book has a section on stretching, I think.
I’m in the same boat here. My hips as well as low back flexibility is atrocious. I use a 2" above parallel box squat because I can’t go any deeper and that’s with a Westside Barbell ultra wide stance. I just started stretching post-workout and it feels great. I hope to see some increase in flexibilit soon. I’d also be interested in some good stretches for the hips and low back.
it is very common for people to not perform full squats. however i do not think it is due to a lack of hip flexibility. i used to not be able to perform full squats or so i thought. untill 1 day i peeled off a couple of plates and practiced getting lower and lower. my poundages were down untill i perfected my technique. once i did that my poundages went right back up to normal levels. practice squatting to parallel in your bedroom with no resistance other than body weight. if you can do it in your room, you can do it in the gym.
The front squat - push press - back squat - push press complex works great to increase hip flexibility. Make sure to use a light weight to start. Static stretching of the hip flexors also helps. Going over and under hurdles or barriers of all different heights is also a great way to really develop hip flexibility.
Try coach davies hurdle drills they are awesome! there all covered in his book at dragon door
I say, forget the squat! NO big deal! Do front squats & overhead squats.
thanks for the response guys!
But by squatting deep I mean DEEP, like ass to ankles deep, parallel isn’t a problem at all for me.
It seems to me that I lack flexibility laterally in my hips. I can lunge extremely far and low without a single problem, but when I squat wide and try to get really low, that’s when the flexibility screws up.
Thanks again,

Try taking a couple of yoga classes.
I feel ya… I have sore hips for two days after I squat.
