Thought I’d share a realization I had the other day, just in case it might be useful to someone.
All HIIT (for the really uninitiated, HIIT is High Intensity Interval Training) is not created equal!
Not being a runner, shin splints and so on, I’ve been doing my stints in the gym. This means I’ve been using one machine or another (elliptical, etc) doing my “sprints”.
Well, the other day I did them on the rowing machine. You know, the one that has a sliding seat and spins a fan when you row? Holy crap, talk about sucking wind!
Anyhow, once you get reasonably fit, I suspect upping the intensity portion is important. Find an exercise that really lets you go all out – and you can tell by how much it takes out of you.
Assuming you are fit enough to do this without having a heart attack, make sure you aren’t short changing yourself when you are doing your intervals.
Needless to say, you’ll find me on the rower on HIIT days from now on… or perhaps lying next to it in a world of hurt. Cool thing is, the rowers are hardly ever in use either…
