Wifey gest a call from her Doctor tellin her that Cholesterol was very high. Supposedly both kinds were high.
She is worried. Any advice or reccommendations would be deeply appreciated.

she is also allergic to shellfish, so no fish oil with shellfish
Regular cholesterol tests don’t really tell you much about anything ESPECIALLY for women. The numbers your doctor probably tested are relatively worthless. If you really want to know, you need a particle size test. For the regular test, HDL and triglycerides are about the only numbers that are somewhat predictive. HDL as high as possible, triglycerides as low as possible. If you want to improve your numbers, reduce your carb intake and reduce your omega 6 polyunsaturated fat intake (mainly vegetable oils).
Saturated fat has no impact on heart disease, you actually don?t need to reduce that at all.

Ask for a VAP panel at her very next blood draw.
While it’s still too new for any “acceptable” guidelines to be drawn up, it still provides 4x as much relevant data than the woefully basic (read: subject to any number of erroneous conclusions) regular lipid/lipoprotein profile.
read the book, “the great cholesterol myth”. Very Very few people should take statins. They basically don’t reduce the risk of death, and the amount they sometimes can reduce the risk of heart disease is paltry while generally giving you very nasty side effects.
proscribing statins based on a generic cholesterol test should be considered malpractice.

will do
thanks so much!!
My old man was prescribed statins a few years ago, despite having never had a heart attack. He’s hypertensive, but it could easily be fixed by diet and exercise. He really doesn’t need the statins.
I tell him this, but he won’t listen to me. Why should he? I’m not a doctor. It makes me sad.
@ yogi. sory to hear that.
i was just reading these posts to my wife.
she really doesnt want to take the lipitor. she has hep c, and it could cause liver complications.
she is also on hi blood preesure meds… hydrochlorothiazide.
